Is there a free program out there that i can use on my X30 to just drive around and find non wep protected wifi spots to connect to? I would use the normal wifi program but it does not say whether a wifi network is wep enabled or not.

Basically that means there have been a lot of discussions here (and elsewhere) about whether or not it's right to mooch bandwidth that you're not paying for. :) There are those that feel all wifi should be open, and others feel that if they are paying for the connection and you're using it without their permission, then you are stealing.

It's not cool to get on other people's networks even if they are not technically able to enable the wep and encryption settings. If you leave your wi-fi it will tell if something is on....believe me there are too many unprotected networks out there. Be cool, play on your own network. No point in getting in trouble for something as trivial as this.

Wardriving is not illegal (in North America that is), but connecting to networks without proper authorization certainly is. Obviously if you find a local hotspot that provides free wireless Internet access, then you are probably good to go (coffee shops usually have this these days).

Either way check with the provider before connecting.

Now, as far as what to use, you can use WiFiFoFum or you can use MiniStumbler depending on your device. Read the documentation that comes with both applications to see if your device is supported.

Thank you all. I think that if somebody is stupid enough to not put a wep key in place then they deserve it. The people in my neighborhood are very wealthy, so it should not hurt them. The other place is like the library.

But seriously, I bought my axim to be functional, and if I need to borrow a few kbps's of someone else's net to do that while I'm in their area.. so be it. I leave my wifi open, and as long as people aren't using it for bad things (hax0ring, kiddy-porning, etc) then by all means me casa su casa (sp?). I've also discovered that War-Skating is tits...major major tits..

So you counter with your own justification. "I share mine, and if I need to use someone's to extend my device's functionality so be it".

I'd love to hear you argue that in court.

Obviously your choice, but I wouldn't try that reasoning if you get caught. That next WiFi access you steal could be someone's honeypot.

LOL as i predicted, this has thread has fallen prey to the "nail me on the cross" group. the Morality police are in the house! Cry a friggen river. Don't like it? protect yourself! People are going to do, what people do.

BTW. i have only done it once, just to see if i could. I have no need to do it, as i use mine locally (at home) and at the local coffee shop, which provides free access.
