Association Frustration & Orb

Greetings All!

So, I am playing with this Orb dealie, and I like it! The problem I am having, is that Orb streams with Windows Media Player. I installed GSPlayer, and checked off all of the associations in the program, but when I click the play icon on Orb, WMP still streams the file. WMP seems to have trouble for me, streaming. If it looses the buffer, it doesn't seem to be able to rebuffer. It just throws me an error.

How can I change Orb streams (whatever format they are... I don't know) to GSPlayer? Within GSPlayer there is an option to give it a URL to stream from... great idea, considering that most stream URLs are very long and contain some sort of hashcode. There's no wayt to type that in!

So, is it possible to change this?

I was going to say use Pocket Tweak by tillansoft but Orb is setup for WMP, .wmv files, so the only freeware program that will play those streams is WMP for PPC.

How are you streaming... Bluetooth through a phone or in the radius of a WiFi network?

After a bit of tinkering, I am 100% positive that this problem stems from the crappiness of WMP. Has anyone else experienced problems with WMP and Orb?

I use an 802.11b wireless network when I stream to my PPC.

I streamed Orb to my laptop just fine. I tried it on my wired network, and on my wireless network. It worked.

I attempt to stream the same song on my PPC, and WMP can't handle it. It also doesn't handle most of the di.fm streams very well. All I get is text saying "error", towards the top of the player, where the song title should be. If I try the very same stream, except click the .pls link, then GSPlayer takes over, and within about 1 nanosecond it has the stream buffered, and I never have a problem. When WMP _does_ manage to play a stream, it is broken, crappy, and it constantly has to rebuffer! Has anyone else run in to these issues with WMP?

It really boggles me how MS puts out this software. Same stream, WMP breaks it, a freeware program plays it fabulously.

Has anyone else run in to these streaming/WMP problems when using Orb? If so, how did you solve them?

Okay. Now that you mentioned di.fm I know it's a bandwidth problem. Always choose the lowest bandwidty on your PPC. 22-32/kbps if choosable and work your way up from there. I love the di.fm Jazz channel.

It's really not a bandwidth problem though. The .pls streams on di.fm are 96k. They work just fine when GSPlayer plays them. If I try and play even the basic 26k wma file through WMP, it just errors out. Almost every single time. WMP just cannot stream music properly it would seem. This is why I want to try and use Orb with GSPlayer instead. I am positive that WMP is causing these problems. Why else would GSPlayer play the 96k stream perfectly, and WMP not even be able to play the very same stream at 26k?

That's cause your going through shoutcast for GSPlayer streams. Go directlty to www.di.fm and try the WMP Logo streams.

Right. I described above what happens. WMP doesn't work.

WMP simply doesn't handle the di.fm streams. Does it work for you?

Yes. What genres are yoj trying to stream? I'll try if you let me know.

I'm on t-mobiles unlimited internet access with an X50v and a Sony Ericsson T610 phone.

Hardcore Techno works fine. mikeyp turned me on to it.

Hmmmm... maybe it's all just quirky!!

For example, try the Trance channel. One of the heaviest channels. I can't ever get on that with WMP. But I always do with GSPlayer.
