Certificates

I was just browsing around in the Start -> Settings -> Systems tab menus and looking at Certificates.

Under the Root tab there are a few certificates which have expiry dates. Ranging from 12/31/2006 to 8/1/2028.

What happens when they expire?

Or even more importantly, what is the purpose of having this menu??

My guess is that expiring dates are often based on when the next release of a component or serie of components are due. If no new one is out on time or updated by the user it stops working or you are ask to perform an update of the component(s) via ROM upgrade or a patch. The menu is a way of tracking due dates.
