General PPC vs Palm observation

I don't intend to sound negative, basically I'm just happy with my new Axim and with this forum.

I recently switched from Palm (T|E -> TT5 -> LifeDrive), and I have noticed a general difference in the forums. The Palm forums seem to be driven by negativity and 'debates' about what Palms can or can't do well (multitasking, Wifi, whatever) while here most people overall seem happy with their devices and tend just talk about what they can do with them and how to get those things done.

And I think this says alot.

I know this is a generalization, and no generalizations are true on a case by case basis. Just an observation.

And thanks for the great forum.

I don't know if this would stretch to the HP user sites or not...and if you want to see some complaining, look in some other formus here such as "Tell Dell." When you deal with any mass produced device, 20% of the people will automatically hate the device or the company...20% will love them...and the middle 60% is what really counts. I'd say most of the 60% is overall positive about Dell Axims and Dell as a company. I'd consider myself as part of that 60%, as I don't blindy declare allegiance to any company.

I noticed the same thing about the palm forums, that's why I visit here often. It's friendly, helpful and informative. And funny, too, sometimes.

Sounds a lot like you're talking about PalmInfocenter. They have very liberal moderation, which is sometimes not a bad thing, but it has attracted a lot of trolling (Palm-bashing by PPC users) and bickering between members. Add to that the fact that the regulars there all seem to think they could do a much better job designing a PDA or running a company than Palm, and it does give the site an overall air of negativity.

But there are plenty of helpful people at PIC and if you just want a problem solved about your Palm, they will do a lot to sort it out for you. Those members who haven't been turned away by the bullying ignorance of others, that is.

i was basically a palm guy, and let me share something about those negativity...

in the PPC world, initially it was such a crappy OS - highly unstable, memory hogs, very slow, etc. but at least there were efforts to improve upon it - persistent storage, dual card slots, wifi/bt, more stability, etc.

the problem with the palm world is that it has basically been a standstill - palmos6, which was promised to change all that; eventually evaporated into the ether... we now have rumors of a Treo running windows mobile...

and of course, you being a faithful "follower" - wouldnt you feel resentment and disappointment towards the manufacturer? all those promises...

c'mmon, it has been two years now since OS5 - and the LifeDrive? as in duh!?!

it is just that no one wants to be left alone...

I'm a Palm -> UX50 Clie -> x50v convert,
I have never looked back, the Clie site was very handy, no where near as good as this place.
I was aloyal Palm user, moving was not a simple decision, glad Id id when I did.

What's in a name? It's still called Palm OS5 (well, Garnet) but it has undergone numerous changes since initial release three years ago this October. My X50v has something called WM2003 on it, although MS did release a second edition a year or so ago. Same core, I think. Look at Windows XP; been around for yonks. Doesn't mean it's no good.

I wouldn't buy a LifeDrive but what do you mean by "duh"? It's the world's first PDA with a hard drive. Might take a while to get it right but Palm are still innovating in some areas.

do your research better - the FIRST PDA with a HDD is the Linux-based Sharp Zaurus...

http://www.mobiletechreview.com/Sharp_Zaurus_C3000.htm

also, HDD in the LifeDrive is simply a CF-based microdrive (of course, our Ax can simply handle) - this was proven when somebody took apart his LD...

Palm is not innovating - what they basically do is "steal" ideas... cant be helped - they've already lost their creativity... and that is one of the reasons for the re-merger of PalmSource and PalmOne...

-- off topic probably, but...
Dual Communications!?! the Clie TH55 had that long long ago...
Virtual Graffiti? the Clie NX had that... First PalmOS5? the Clie...
Hi-Resolution/Hi-Resolution-Plus? the Clie...

if Sony didnt leave the market (due to internal bickerings since they wanted to pursue what has the most money - the PSP) - then Palm would still play catchup...

--- edit ---
- included link to HDD-based Sharp Zaurus
- edited text wording

For Pete's sake I was conceding the point to avoid an argument. While the Zaurus is not the typical form factor of the LifeDrive or an Axim, I agree with you that its hard drive preceded the LifeDrive.
