Where can I find the applet file for memory

I would like to add a shortcut for 'memory' in my start menu. I have already done this for 'brightness' by copying the applet file from the windows directory and pasting a shortcut for it in start menu folder.

But I can't seem to find the 'memory' applet file in the windows folder. Even when I 'show hidden files' in resco explorer.

Where art thou, memory applet?

The memory applet is part of the main control panel. To create a shortcut to it you can create a simple text file and add the following to it:

49#ctlpnl cplmain.cpl,4,0?\Windows\cplmain.cpl,-5067

Now rename the text file and change it's extension to "lnk" and copy it to the Start Menu.

Thanks for the reply. It didn't work, though. I created the file in notepad on my desktop. I saved as *.lnk.

Under 'encoding' in notepad, I left it as ANSI...should I have changed it to unicode or one of the other settings?

Thanks,
Ben

I take that back...it did work. I just didn't realize I had to go in and select it cause I already had seven shortcuts chosen in the start menu.

Thanks for the very cool piece of advice. This will probably go down as the 'all-time' best piece of advice I'll ever get on Aximsite, cause I NEVER would have figured this out myself.

I don't suppose you know how I can assign an icon to the memory shortcut, do you?

Thanks very much,
Ben

The icon is set by \Windows\cplmain.cpl,-5067, which points to the standard control panel memory icon. You probably just need to do a soft-reset for it to display correctly.

The problem is cplmain.cpl.
It contains only the medium-sized icons.
This means that they will not show up in any menus and they will not show up on a VGA device.

Some of the icons contained in the control panel are both 16x16 and 32x32. But the memory one is only 32x32. It does still show up in the StartMenu, only it is clipped (see screenshot below). Don't know how VGA affects this though.
