Default install directory

Is it possible to change the default installation directory? I want to install programs to storage memory by default, not to the subset of RAM that's allocated as storage memory (there's only so much of that to go around).

Best I can figure, there's no way to install an app into a different directory without using the ActiveSync desktop program and clicking "no" when asked if you want to install it in the default directory. Which means that if I want to install a .CAB file that I downloaded directly onto the device, I have no choice but to install it to RAM.

If it's cab files you want to install... try using Cabinst (its a freebie and it works)

Cool, that'll solve the problem, for the most part. It would still be nice if there was a way to change the default directory, though.

I'm a bit confused. I thought .CAB files were moved intact to the PPC, then run from there. If so, ActiveSync need be used only for moving the file in the first place, and so can't you merely move it into whichever directory you wish?

CAB files contain the installer and can only work when placed in the PPC (i.e., not the desktop). By default, CAB files will always install into main memory, regardless of where it is located in the first place. That's why Andy recommended Cabinstl.

If you want to change the default installation location in ActiveSync, that can be done by changing one of the settings. (Sorry I can't be more specific as I'm on mobile). However, this has no bearing on the location to which a CAB file installs.

.Cab files are compressed installation files, kinda like .zip files. When you run them they automatically install the related application to RAM, unless you use something like cabinst, which allows you to direct where the app is installed, like you can with Activesync.
