I just received my Axim x50v with Windows Mobile 2003 SE and will be receiving the Mobile 10 OS in October or November when it is released. I want to know that when I use ActiveSync to backup my PDA it's actually backing up the files, third party software, and OS. Is this true about ActiveSync? Will it backup the OS, files, including any Dell applications as well that came with it?
If I don't like Mobile 10 and want to roll back to the 2003 SE I want to be sure I can reinstall the older OS WITH any Dell applications it had on it.
Lastly, where would I get a copy of the Dell applications that are installed on my x50v if they don't reside on the 2003 SE CD (i.e. Dell WLAN Utility)?
first of all, it is called WM 5.0 (not "mobile 10")
next, you WILL like it. Dell probably wouldn't release it if it sucked. Even if you didn't like it (which I am sure you will) the upgrade will probably backup the old OS.
Activesync definitely backs up everything in your Main Memory. Of course make sure to check "Full Backup" in the Backup menu. Usually you don't need to backup your Built-in Storage but you can do that from the File Explorer in Activesync as well. A hard reset doesn't delete your Built-in Storage. Dell WLAN Utility is already in the main memory so even if you hard reset, it will come back again. No need to re-install. For additional software you have your Dell Software CD. I'm sure the WM 5.0 will backup your old configuration first, before installing the new OS like Tancerman said.
Yes, it's WM 5.0 and not mobile 10 of which I was getting Windows Media ver 10 for the PC mixed up with it. Thanks for the correction.
I'm aware that a hard reset will not erase what is in main memory, otherwise we'd have to reinstall the OS each time. I'm still not conviced, however, that I will have the ability to install which ever OS I desire on the PDA including rolling back to the previous OS and Dell apps. I say that because with my Axim I received my registration key for Windows Mobile 2003 SE without the file/image for the OS itself. My expectation would be that I would receive an actualy copy of the OS just like for the PC (i.e. WinXP, Win2K, etc.).
Maybe you're right and somehow WM 5.0 will allow me to backup the PDA including the OS prior to an install allowing me to roll back if desired.
Let me give you a scenario. WM 5.0 doesn't run an app I really need to have and there isn't a replacement for it yet. I need to roll back to the old OS.
yes, the setup will probably backup your current rom (wm 2003se). All regular rom updates (eg wm2003se A01 to A02 upgrade) have the ability to backup the old rom, so I am sure that the Wm 5.0 upgrade will have a way of backing up the current os. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it.

Actually your terminology is not quite correct. Main Memory is not what the the OS is installed to. The OS is installed to the ROM, which is persistent and untouched by a hard reset. Main Memory is the RAM, which is what gets deleted with a hard reset.
As Tancerman explained, with every upgrade there is a opportunity to do a backup of the existing ROM. Make sure you do one and you should be able to revert back.

The registration key you received is for Microsoft Outlook which is on the CD you should have received, this software gets installed on the PC, not the Axim, so you're all set.
