I spoke with a live person at Dell a few minutes ago, and he said that they "expected" the upgrade to start shipping on 10/17 to customers (like me) who purchased the upgrade along with their Axims. If the upgrade is on your purchase order, you get it automatically, and don't need to contact Dell (he said). Chatty fellow and he even mentioned Aximsite as a place to go to get info on WM 5.0.
I just spoke with a Dell Rep with their Chat interface. I would like to say first that their Chat is so easy and is much better than trying to talk to someone via telephone.
So I was told and confirmed that the upgrade to the Dell Axim x50s is being released in the third week of October. There is no exact date for its release. Apparently Dell is working with Microsoft on this and the person I spoke to infered that Microsoft is still working on the OS for the Axim x50s. So it has nothing to do with Dell as far as I was told. And everything to do with Microsoft still fixing a few bugs in the software for the x50s.
I also confirmed that as soon as it is released Dell will ship the CDs. I got the feeling that my ship date of the 14 is way off. The person kept telling me that it is most likely my CD will ship much before that. So have no fear ladies and gentlemen. We still have a week until it is released at the least.

Look, I don't want to rush them into sending out something if it's not ready -- but if the X51's already have it, WTF is so different about the hardware that they can't ship it for the X50's?! Dell has no incentive to deliver this software on-time. It's not as if they're going to get more cash by issuing it faster.
I agree. That's just what I was told, that "Microsoft" hasn't released it yet. I didn't want to make a big stink and confuse the nice lady from India by telling her that the x51vs have it all ready. But Dell has no incentive to do it since a lot of the CDs being sent are free gifts. The profits made on the people who bought the CDs is nill because they either bought a 51v or purchased the CD and canceled and bought a 51v. So I agree that Dell is just being a pain in the ass about this.

What does CD licensing mean? I am located in Germany, where the CD is not available, and want to ask a friend in the US to order the CD and then give it to me. Would that be possible? --Michael
For what its worth, I got an email from Dell Canada Customer Service and they said they were expecting to have the CDs in stock on 18 October.
Several days later I got a call from 'Austin' at Dell (416 758 2258) and he informed me that I should expect the CDs to be mailed out at the end of the month.
When I mentioned the earlier email's date, he ummed and erred a bit and said that the delays are coming from Microsoft.
Whatever.
I also had to remind him that in my case, the CD is free as part of sales promotion when I bought my X50. 'Oh, right', he said.
Anyhoo, sometime between now and the release of WM6 we should see the CD....

Not correct. The price of Axim X50's increased right around the same time that they started advertising the "free WM 5.0 upgrade CD when available."
