Just got on the phone with Dell. Figured I'd join in the fun.

Anyway - Here's what I gathered through the broken English:

"Have you install Axim to hard drive before order upgrade CD? Upgrade CD has no ways of becoming upgrade with no install to hard drive that has not been forseen. With upgrade install shipping no pants. Install to hard drive with no pants ensures failure of parts inside pants and is seen as voiding of warranty on pants. Further, pants on your hard drive are optional. You can for purchase specially cases from Dell that work as pants before upgrade ships. Specially cases allow putting stylus in pants with extended battery. I can transfer you to sales for to get in their pants."

Dell is out to rip customers off with $100 worth of shipping charges, so they can "make more profit" is exactly what the article said. Please Dell, bend us over one more time.......right when gas gets nice and ezpensive or you can take the second option of figuring out where the nearest major post office is, and drive there to pick your computer up within 10 days of its arrival, or it gets shipped back to Dell.

If you've been around the pocketPC ranks a while you may Remember the Toshiba e740 devices. This was a nice device, I had one, very popular.

Toshiba made the tactical mistake of not offering an upgrade to Windows Mobile for this device. The backlash from returned devices and bad reviews caused Toshiba to exit the PDA business here in the USA.

So I think Dell has incentive to do this upgrade right, and in a timely manner. My X50v is my 2nd Dell device. If my experience remains positive, there will be another Dell device. If not .. Well I vote with my wallet.
