why isnt WM5 more backward-compatible than it should be?

there is this other thread that somehow sparked some inquisitive nature, and it being being off-topic, id like to move it over here...

it is basically trying to answer why the Windows Mobile Team never tried to exert a little extra effort in making their OS more backwards-compatible than it should be...

we have a change in CPUs, apps dont work... we have a change in OS, apps dont work... moreso the long line from WinCE to Palm-size PC to HPC to WM2003SE, and now to WM5...

i mean, what would happen to our software investments if each and every two years that a new OS comes up, we have to buy upgrades?

as ive mentioned in my previous posts (noted above), my ol' MS-DOS 6.0-based apps still work with my WinXP Pro SP2 setup...

what gives? is this, as I see it, more greed?

Actually I have had pretty good luck so far with most of my software working on the x51v. The stuff that doesn't is usually hardware or driver specific such as the WiFi software.

I use to be part of a forum for the Casio E-100 (1999) on WinCE 2.11 and there were discussions similar to this and the answer broke down to stability/speed/memory. By getting rid of as much backwards compatibility as possible in theory in makes the OS more stable, smaller install, etc.
