Excuse me, I am new to PDA world and I just ordered my X51V from Dell.com (on route shipping). I know this PDA will come with WM5.0, but since I know my current navigation software (iGuidance) may not work perfectly with WM5.0, is there any way I can rollback to WM2003SE on X51V ?!
Thanks.
I don't expect that there is a WM2003SE version for the X51v at this stage. It is possible that one may be released because it is similar hardware to the X50v and there have been some issues with WM5 - but I would not count on it.
Despite the fact you bought iGuidence via eBay I would still try to contact the support team and see if you can get the update/patch to make it work with WM5. PPC software groups are usually really helpful and if you provide them with your purchase details I am sure something will be worked out.
Cheers

I am starting to agree, I am going to do a restore tomorrow back to my old ways, and put a disclaimer under MyPDA for all to view ASAP. The power up issues just caused a hard reset that I did not iniciate, therefore luckily I had backed it up.
Why I regret the upgrade:
1. Backup and Restore are gone
2. I have an issue of hanging
3. Cannot sync over a network anymore (AS 4.0 won't backup a WM5 device)
4. Runs slower, especially after a reboot of device
5. Get the errors often (device.exe and gwes.exe die too often)
The cd is due to arrive today but I'm somewhat concerned about installing it. I have a x50v and everything seems to work. Will WM5 screw me up?What is the UPSIDE of upgrading?
Any advice would be apprieciated.
Seems to me that doing the upgrade is a waste of time unless there's something that WM5 offers that you gotta have. WM2003SE is really stable - and works great. Your main focus should be on what the box can do for you. Applications are the real lifeblood of these devices. The platform update might be cool and new but if it's not offering something compelling that really makes a difference why mess with it?
Give WM5 a little time to mature, THEN take the plunge if you want to.
OTOH if you just love rebuilding your machines then give it a whirl! It's still nothing but a collection of 0's and 1's anyway!
I also forgot to mention that activesync went on a rampageand started to delete applications off of my pocket pc as if I had hit the remove button. I could not stop it and had to remove the cable. At the time all I was doing was reinstalling OnCourse mapping software. It was bizarre. (no I am not some wet behind the ears rookie either)
Activesync is now refusing to communicate with my pocketpc. It reminds me of how bad it used to work back with my old cassioepia E10 and my HP 620 when getting activesync to work was torture at best.
I do not know about anyone else but for me there are very little benefits to this upgrade and the removal of some of the features I used most (network sync) makes me regret upgrading.
I think I will go dump Axim in a drawer somewhere and start using paper maps again. I am just tired of Microsoft's "upgrades" that are nothing more a headache.
Boy, this is scarey! I just got the Windows Mobile 5.0 Disc from Dell that I was going to load onto my X50V, but after reading the ActiveSync 4.0 USB Connection Troubleshooting Guide on the Windows Mobile website, reading Chris de Herrera's website re the detailed steps for installation, and now reading all the stuff that you guys have written, I think I will stay 2003 SE. If even the guys who have new X50V's with the Mobile 5.0 already loaded on it are having problems, I hate to think what will happen to my X50V when I try to download Mobile 5.0. Everything for me is finally working 100% on my X50V, and I am really pleased with its operation. Why mess with Mother Nature! Let's see what happens down the line about the way they hopefully get the bugs out of the software.
If we have learned one thing over the past 20+ years of "upgrading Gates-ware," it's that they NEVER - absolutely NEVER - get it right the first time. Best to wait until WM5.1 (or whatever the corrected version will be called).

It is really amazing to think that a company like Dell that makes good hardware can't come up with the ability to install a new software operating system like Windows Mobile 5.0. Or to put it a different way, why are so many problems with installation. It's not the $35 or $40 for the disc that bugs me, it's the fact that so many people seem to have the same problem with installing it. Then once installed, there are all these additional problems.
