Hard resets have always meant losing everything in the PDA. You should assume that it'll continue to be that way and always back up your PDA.
It's not hard. It doesn't take long. It's not painful.

In WM2003, doing a hard reset would not clear out your BIS (only your main memory programs and PIM data, etc).
This is not the case in WM5, since there is no more BIS as it existed in WM2003. Doing a hard reset will erase everything on the device. This may sound bad, but on the positive side, Dell's built-in backup/restore utility will also backup/restore the entire device in WM5 (in WM2003 it ignored the BIS). So just be sure to back up everything you want to save before doing hard resets.

Hmmm....I'm not so sure. On the x51v, all installed programs and settings are stored in flash memory, aren't they? I don't think that a hard reset formats the flash memory, does it? I haven't had to do one yet, though.

In WM5 the definition of "hard reset" has been changed to clear all data in the user-accessible area of ROM. The end result is the same as with WM2003SE- Storage cards stay untouched, but your PPC is back to the state it was when you first turned it on. The only difference is that there is no more "built-in-storage" folder that survives a hard reset.

How much space is there after a hard reset on an x50v? I had a third party software do a hard reset on me :| and it could be my imagination but my storage doesn't seem to be the same as it was when I first installed WM5.
In short, I guess my question is how much space does WM5 and associated basic files use on the (one time built in) storage.

I think all memory has a memory. I'm sure someone in the FBI with all the right knowledge and equipment could recover it but as far as a laymen is concerned i would think not....IMHO

Using the Dell utility completely destroyed my ActiveSync partnership with my PC - started making duplicates, refusing to sync changes to my calendar, etc. Had to do another hard reset and start from scratch.
