well, mine's not a power on issue because of button presses. I put it on my nightstand, nothing near it, and let it lay there all night. When I checked it the next morning, it was dead. No cards in it (SD or CF).
Back to Windows Mobile 2003 SE for now. It's been off the charger for 12 hours now, powered up for 30 seconds and still at 99% battery life.
I have had the same issue. I decided this morning that it might be my Magicstor 2gb drive. I removed the drive this morning, the battery life has been fine today, but still had to reset the Ax once today to get it to come to life. This (needing reset) happens if I click "stop" in active sync on the desktop app. The Axim seems to sync multiple times when left in the cradle, so I sometimes have to stop it.
Well, in the last 2 hours, I found that without the SD card, the battery drain was a little less, but Active Sync still keeps popping up, even though I went into memory and closed it down.
Also, with the SD card, I haven't lost much in the way of battery power. I have 0 programs installed on my system right now. When troubleshooting, I try to keep it as simple as possible.
I was at 95% when I last turned it off (About 20 minutes ago), and now at 94%. So, not looking good if WM5 was supposed to keep us from draining the battery in a powered off state.
Whoa, the 95 and 94 are only estimates, and you have to turn it off by going into power or else it still goes to sleep

No matter when I check the processor, if it is set on auto, it is always running at Max. I don't have a memory card in, os that is not an issue. The soft reset tip does not always work either. If I have it set to Power Save, all is good - but I want to be able to use auto. If I do though, it drains too fast.

I put the magicstor back in today. The battery was at 100% when I left for work at 2:00pm. When I tried to use the Axim at 8:00pm the battery was completely dead and I had to use a travel charge cable to even use the device at work. This issue definitely has to do with memory-I think the excessive battery drain may be due to the magicstor being an actual mini hard drive and requiring even more power than a cf or sd card. Anyone have any ideas?
OK, this really sucks. I too was expecting an "upgrade" with
WM5. I too had the disgust and embarrasement of trying to show off my joyous upgrade...only to have a flashing yellow light and dead battery.
Has anyone found a "real" fix for this besides having to go back to 2003? Yes I have a SD card...NO I am not going to remove it for the sake of a buggy OS. This borders on the need for a class action lawsuit against Dell and Microsoft for selling (AKA taking money willingly for a faulty program).
I recharged my battery today...and when I could again see my AXIM at all, to also see active sync running...WHY!!! We'll see what happens in the morning with it beinng shutoff all night long.

OK..new thing. When looking at the processor settings, Iwould usually have it at "auto" right? Well...auto is now the same as max...624 MhZ. I have to set it to manual for it to go down to 520MhZ. Going back to "auto" swings it back right to 624 MhZ. Once again...WTF!!!!!
I am hving similr problems with my upgraded X50v. The biggest problem I have is that I regularly need to do a soft reset to power it back on - I'm taking a dozen times a day!! I've pulled the SD card to see if that chnges anything but I've got the downgrade (which looks more like an upgrade) ready to roll WM5 back OUT - it SUCKS !!!
Here is the problem in a nutshell. Activesynce turns itself on at random and drains the battery. Here is a list of issue that I have had with the new WM5 upgrade:
1. Activesync turns on automatically. This can happen while my Axim is off the cradle, which drains the battery fast, or when it is on, I am not synced, an then all of the sudden ths sync innitiate itself.
2. My CF card (I have a 1G SD and CF card in at the same time) will disappear for no reason. Takes a soft reset for it to appear again.
3. Sometimes my Axim will not power on when I press the power button. Takes a soft reset to get it to power on.
4. Wi-fi will sometimes turn itself on for no reason, especially right after a soft reset
I need fixes...can anyone help? I do not believe rolling back to 2003 A05 is a safe option.

Hi guys, I'm jumping in from the x51v side because we've been experiencing a lot of these same issues. I'm assuming there could be some similarities here. The default setting for Activesync when you're mobile (not connected to your PC) is to try to sync every 5 mins. This is what I found was causing the battery drain.
You need to go into the scheduling options on your PC and change it to manually. If the schedule option is greyed out in Activesync here is what to do:
- set up a dummy server (put in any number as a dummy address
- this will give you access to the schedule option
- change the sync settings to manual
- run a sync
- then you can delete the dummy server
- do another sync and now Activesync won't try to connect every 5 mins.
There is still an issue of Activesync turning the unit on while in the cradle - the only workaround right now is to disable to LAN connection to the device.
I just hung up with Dell, my axim is Dead due to this upgrade. They sent me a replacement already. I sent them an email last night describing this issue, and @ 1:20am this morning they shipped me a replacement. Before I even spoke with them, they sent the replacement. Either I'm darn good at writing email, they are especially generous, or they know there is a probelem and were willing to send the replacement without talking to me. Anyway, a replacement is on the way and I will not be loading wm5.0 on it any time soon. Just a word to the wise.

Can you provide me with a copy of that e-mail? I'm ready to throw my Axim out the window! I too have upgraded and have had no luck in resolving the problem. Dell needs to step up to the plate!
I included mu service tag and express service code. I explained that before the upgrade the axim worked perfectly, and after the upgrade it repeatedly needed to be reset. After the most recent reset, the progress bar hangs at ~85% and will go no further-even after sitting on the cradle trying for over 9 hours. Funny thing, I never got a response to my email so I chatted on line with them, then called. After calling, I found out they already shipped the replacement (which should arrive this am according to DHL) even though I had not yet called or chatted on line with them, just sent one email. The only reason I can think of that they would do that, is that if this is not an isolated incident and they had dealt with it a few times before. There is at least one thread here where the same thing happened and they replaced an Axim x50v.
I upgraded to WM5 the night before last. The install was uneventful but afterwards, I kept getting errors (gwes). During the day yesterday, I used the Axim 2-3 times briefly and when I got home, the Axim was dead.
Besides the stock software on the Axim, I had Pocketbreeze, iLauncher, Pocketweather and Pocket Informant installed. I didn't have a CF or SD card in the Axim.
To make a long story short, I went back to WM2003 SE last night and my Axim is working like a champ now. The power issue, in my opinion, is a critical problem for WM5 and Dell to resolve.
