x50, WM5, dead battery after 1 day

Hey all,

I did my upgrade to an X50 mid yesterday, WM 5.0 was running on it fine, and things looked good. I went to power on this morning and was told to press the contacts button because a critical memory error had occurred.

After the reboot, I was told that my main battery was low (it was at 7%). I had not used my Ax since last night when I turned it off (yes, I verified that it was off) at approximately 5:00 PM. It's now 8:30 AM when I turned it on, and the battery was almost completely dead.

Is this an issue with WM 5.0?

Well, make sure you didn't have any programs or notifications automatically turning on your device during the night.

Same issue here - no error message though. Where as before I could run for about 2.5 days with my average use (turn on, check email, update calendar or To Do list etc) but after 2 days of using WM5 I find I am below 10% before the end of the day (both days).
CPU is set to auto, backlight auto off, etc

All and all I am not happy with WM5 and will try to roll back to 2003 if possible.

I didn't have anything running when I checked the memory applet in settings. The only thing there was ActiveSync (because I had to plug the thing into my cradle to charge it).

I have also noticed significantly faster power drain using WM5 on my X50v as compared to 2003.

i noticed that too... what happened to the complete power off feature of the wm5 that x51v got? someone was asking about it but no one reply to it.

i have that battery lite plugin that came on the upgrade cd installed. does that one use up more juice cuz it's constantly query battery status, memory status, and storage status?

The same thing happened to me with my x50v, but that was even before I upgraded to WM5. I was still using WM2003SE at the time. Turns out I left my axim on and I didn't have it configured to turn off automatically.

I had the same issue and memory error last night. I thought I had bricked my axim, because at 5:00 I had 75% of battery left, at 8 when I got the memory error and it shut off. It never occured to me that I would have lost 75% of my battery in three hours of being off. I believe that I know what it is though. I believe it is activesync on the device bringing the device up to a state like what happens at 12 midnight. It comes up to sync during the day but gives no indication that it is on, so we never know, but it is running. Everytime I power my x50v up activesync is running even when I am in my car no where near a computer. Each time I shut it down, it comes up next time I power on. This is a serious problem. Anyone else have anythoughts. I have by no means tested this. I am an application developer making a unresearched guess.

I'm also having battery drain very quickly. I was at 93% when I went to bed last night. It was at 90% this morning when I woke up which I consider normal. Today I have used it about 10 min total and I'm down to 17%. I was at 30% and a half hour later when I turned on to check battery it was at 17%.

A couple of times when I have turned on activesync has been on.

I also have times when it has been off for a while that I can not turn on. I have to do soft reset.

Yesterday it also drained very fast and I had to soft reset to turn on. I wonder why more people are not having these problems? Could it be related to program?

It is weird to me that it does not draining it at night. It has been happening to me after a reminder from tasks or calendar has come up. Anyone with battery draining have no reminders pending?

Thanks!

I don't have any reminders pending. Today I also noticed when activesync is on my wireless icon in the top bar is showing the little tower like wireless is on, but when I check it is not. The icon in the bottom shows both wireless modules as being off. That confused me. Anyone else have ideas?

Battery Drain?? X50V always running @ 624 MHz?

I have a Axim X50v and noticed the same major battery drain with no BT or wireless running. One item I noticed is even in the free state with nothing running the processor was running full out at 624 MHz in "Auto" mode. Once I changed it to "Power Saving" it went down to 208 MHz. I am going to try the battery life with this setting and verify the difference. I also have noticed that it seems to be turning itself on even with reminders and notifications turned off.

I just got off the phone with dell cs again, they are going to send me a new x50v they are convinced it is a hardware problem I tried tellingthem about activesync in the background and stuff.. but they don't seem to accept it. so I am getting another axim that they are going to walk through the upgrade with me... apparently an application developer that does some development on these things can't handle upgrading the rom...lol. But what are you going to do, they hold all the strings. I just hope that they finally figure out this is software and not hardware. OH well.

Same thing happend two days ago. I thought it was the alarm because it "Woke" me up in the morning. HA. It was at about 70% full, then 8 hours later I checked it next, the light was flashing orange, and wouldn't wake up so I restarted to find I had 1%. No problems since that.

I upgraded my x50v to WM5 Mon night and went back to WM2003se on Wednesday night. After having the x50v off overnight, I got a memory error when I went to turn it on in the morning. Then, the battery died twice, even though it was supposedly off.

I liked the new interface (minus those silly soft buttons), but I think I'll stick it out until a few of these nasty bugs are fixed.

I downloaded Pocket Informant 2005 R3 Oct. 20, close to the time it was announced. I have a bad habit of NOT WAITING, and being among the first to use the new upgrades.

After the installation, one of the things I noticed, besides all of the bugs, was the noticable power drain, visibly counting down on the percent meter, and on the top bar battery meter (slowly, but I had never seen it drain so fast with minimum use).
It was fully charged when taken off the cradle. 14 hours later, I got the Memory Error message. But when I pushed the CONTACT button, nothing happened. It was too dead. I used a spare battery. (I tried the big battery again, and got the error message, and then, "This will shut down in 10 seconds, 9, 8...)

Dell support said that that error is caused by memory being corrupted.

I sent an email to PocketInformant.com for help. They asked my exact version and build. When I replied R3 buile 4??, they didn't address my 5+ problems/bugs, but instead asked me to look at their website with the fixes for Pocket Informant TFT R4 version.
They asked:
Can you see if these issues are present in the latest build:

Look at the long list of bugs. And the reason they had to come out with another revision so quickly could be why there are more bugs than normal in the new releases -- their explanation:

Since we're obligated to do a refresh of our builds when we get the RTM build of Visual Studio 2005 from Microsoft*, we were going to do a "Rev 3 Refresh" in November which would contain also any bug fixes and feature requests we could manage in that same timeframe.

But thinking about it more, I've decided that calling it Rev 3 Refresh just is confusing and stupid. So I've decided that any release - no matter how small - will be a new Rev release. So what was going to be Rev 3 Refresh is now Rev 4 and what we planned for Rev 4 is now Rev 5.

Just FYI for all those people following my rambles.

[i]*What does this have to do with us? We use a development tool from Microsoft called embedded Visual C++ for all of our development up to this point. But to do anything with Windows Mobile 5 (specifically) you have to use a new version of their tool which is now part of "Visual Studio 2005" (VS2005). However in Microsoft's timing WM5 came out before VS2005 was finished. So Microsoft created a "GoLive" license which allows developers to ship WM5 built software using only Beta 2 of VS 2005. Beta 2 has some known bugs in the compiler and in the development studio. In my tests the RC version of VS2005 fixes all of those, but we can't ship any software built with it. RTM or the final release is supposed to be out November 7th. So once we get that, we have to rebuild our system a bit, recompile, test, and get it out. I expect that to take 7-14 days after we get RTM. So that'll be Rev 4.

The battery drain only happened once while PI 2005 R3 was installed. I watched it like a hawk. I was relieved when the battery charged to full in ~80 minutes. I don't know what "embedded Visual C++" had to do with it, only that I noticed a faster-than-normal decline in the battery charge while using PI and doing other simple tasks, right after the installation of PI. (It.could've dropped from over 90% to below 60% in 20 minutes???).

I'm guessing the processor on the video chip, influenced somehow by the embedded Visual C++, was knocked off it's axis...

Pocket Informant 2005 TFT R4 fixed the other bugs.
