how to force HI_RES_AWARE (true vga) in Windows Mobile 5.0 ^^

Ok so i was frustrated that my PDF files were displaying pixel doubled in windows mobile 5 so here is the solution to force adobe reader (or any app) to run in HI_RES_AWARE mode

It also has the bonus effect of turning off the annoying Security Prompt

make sure to download the attached files to this post before starting

step 1 : download on to your device (axim) setsecurity.exe and
run it
step 2 : select the option 'Security Prompt Off' (yay no more
security prompts when installing apps)

step 3 : download on to your desktop the attached .MUI file and
rename the file to the program you want to force into
being HI_RES_AWARE

EX : the included file is for adobe reader it is named
AcroRd32.exe.0409.mui for AcroRd32.exe

For internet explorer rename it to
iexploer.exe.0409.mui for iexploer.exe

so -> [exe name].exe.0409.mui only the name of the exe
in the file name has to be changed not the contents of
the file

step 4 : Copy the .MUI file into the same directory as the exe
of the app you wish to force into HI_RES_AWARE (true
VGA)

while this isnt the same thing as SEVGA i prefer this method as it does not affect everything or require a soft reset

btw iexploer.exe.0409.mui will have no affect as pocket IE already runs in a HI_RES_AWARE format.

good luck and if you guys (and gals :P ) have any questions post.

best of luck

-Andy

This works real good with Virtual Earth Mobile.

*EDIT: This hack is no longer necessary with the newest version of Virtual Earth Mobile, downloadable here.

It only works for Adobe. Don't work for others such as TCMP and Pocket Music. To create the file, is it copy the exe file to other directory, rename by adding 0409.mui and the copy back to the same directory ?

Absolutely brilliant. This has fixed AvantGo (which was really becoming annoying with everything in big fonts double spaced.)

Many thanks to the author.

I tried it on a few games under WM2003SE on my x50v with mixed results. However I did notice a significant overall slowdown after using it. A soft reset took care of the slowdown.
Nothing is never "no problem".

I don't know where the "same directory" is in WM2003SE. Where do I copy this file.

If it has no effect on PIE, I won't bother.

Question for people who use true vga mode...

I have a question for the people who use vga mode, especially the ones who use it to read large amounts /ebooks/pdf's Doesn't your eyes get tired and painfull after a while? (I don't use it) but reading someting that small for such a long period of time has got to be severly damaging for your eyes?
Only one organization has ever successfully stopped Jack Bauer, the WGA...
