mobile 5 has been a distaster. Active Sync 4.0 get the most credit for this. Couldn't do the following.
1. Doesn't work with most VPN software.
2. Doesn't work with Firewalls.
3. Doesn't work with mnotes
4. Doesn't seem to work with Napster
5. Doens't seem to work with Internet sharing
6. No network syncing.
Very frustrating, I have been with CE since the Casio E100 and Active sync 3.11 and this is the most messed up thing they have tried to do. I think since Palm has become somewhat less of a threat they don't feel like they really have to compete. So they give us this bloated piece of &%$*. I just hope they somehow fix it. However with them relying on a network connect to sync I do believe these issues are going to stay. I switched mine back and have never been happier to see a older version.
Thankyou Cheryl, what a great site, I had been reading awhile, now its time to post. How could Dell sell such a horrible operating system like win m 5.0, maybe it is a Halloween scare tatic

I think you're wetting the bed here....
When you follow the installation directions precisely and you completely remove all traces of ANY Active Sync version on your PC and PPC and reinstall Active Sync 4.0 and WM5 from your CD - everything should work perfectly. You must start at ground zero for the upgrade to have any chance of operating properly.
The first four items on your list that you say don't work (VPN, firewalls, MNotes and Napster) do not appear on any list that I have seen that confirm them as compatible software. Why would you expect them to operate properly?
If you installed AS 4.0 awhile back when it first became available and you decided to skip this step in the process because you already had it loaded, you will be doomed to failure. The 4.0 on the CD is a much newer build.
I'm trying really hard not to gloat here - but I installed on Nov. 1 and I'm more than satisfied with the results.........

Why everyone blaming Dell? Dell didn't make the OS, they just distributed on good faith that Microsoft has the OS operational. Hell, blame Microsoft, they the ones that created it!
Dell, HP, they are hardware manufacturers. Microsoft is the monopolizing tirant that can change their software without notice, and not be held accountable. IMO, Microsoft is at fault. Why did they release an OS that was not even past Alpha? This isn't even beta quality software.
Dell pulled the OS upgrade in hopes to save them and their customers more grief. They too had hoped the OS would of been "to specification". So Dell is holding back on upgrades till they can do Microsoft's work. Dell no doubt is replacing Axims at an alarming rate, costing them profits and trust. HP got nailed too. How many other hardware manufacturers got nailed?
Dell and the like supplied the vessel. Microsoft released the corrupt OS. Dell and others have their specs and Microsoft was supposed to create this New OS to meet those specs. But guess what? Microsoft did like what they have been notoriously known for... Welcome to Mobile 5!
If you going to blame a company, make sure you're blaming the right one!

Remember the expression, "Leave well enough alone."
Bill Gates lost a number of qualified programers and he
is saving a bundle. Lots of MS "junque" out there. We'll
wait and see perhaps numerous patches for WM 5.
