What happens to the built-in spare battery after upgrade to WM5?

Hi All,

After upgrading your X50v to WM5 from WM2003SE, what is the use of the spare built-in battery in X50v used for (since the new X51v does not have a spare battery included)?

Since everything is stored on 'BIS/flash ROM', what does the WM5 OS use this spare built-in battery in the X50v for now? Is it 'deadweight'?

Just curious.

My guess is that it keeps the clock running when the battery is changed. Same reason your computer has a battery on the mother board that keeps the clock and BIOS settings there when its not powered on.

Exactly what it did under WM2003SE...power the RAM memory and clock while the main battery is removed. Why in the world would that change? The hardware works the same as before.

If you didn't have the backup battery every time you remove the battery and replace it your device would undergo a soft reset. This is what happens with a x51v

So I wonder why did they remove Backup Batt on x51?

Wonder what the rational was then on removing Backup Batt from x51?

Dell/HTC wanted to support a power-off mode for the x51v so need to cut power to both the main battery and the backup battery. I guess they couldn't figure out how to cut power to the backup battery, which would otherwise drain itself trying to keep the ram alive after a power-off, so they just took it out. Or maybe they were just too lazy or cheap.

I'm surprised they didn't put in a large capacitor instead, like in many palm devices, so you'll have at least a minute of power to swap batteries. I wonder if you connect the ac adapter to the x51v, can you swap batteries without a soft-reset. It actually mentions that in the manual.

for x50v, it would become a hard reset without the backup battery.

Yes, unless you have WM5 installed. Then it would be a soft-reset AFAICT.

Best,
