Quel Surprise - Another PDA scraps WM5

Given the hoo-ha reported on this site regarding WM5 (installed natively and as an upgrade) the report that Fujitu-Siemens - manufacturer of the Loox PDA - has cancelled WM5 upgrades for the devices is not a great shock.

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=2728

Still, its a pity that Dell Axim users had to be the guinea pigs.

Meanwhile, I got my invoice from Dell yesterday, reporting that my 'free' WM5 upgrade CD has been fulfilled and then a little later, Purolator (I'm in Canada) called to let me know its in. I'll get it today, but it won't be installed anytime soon. Rumour elsewhere is that there is a patch due out around November 18th. #1 in many, no doubt.

I'll bet some Loox owners will be rather upset. Maybe they should be relieved.

I'd be upset if I owned a Loox. A company has no business cancelling my upgrade because they view it negatively. Use Dell's model. Send out the CD. Make the upgrade available to the persons that want it, but don't force anyone to take it. I just ran into a pair of x51v owners last night who absolutely love their new Axims. They have everything set up to sync remotely so they can stay in touch with their home-based business while out in the field. I was impressed. I was also surprised because this site was giving me the impression that WM5 wasn't working for anyone.

I love my 51. No real problems in the month I've owned it. Oh what a great screen!! OS works fine for me. YMMV I guess.

Well, I may just beg to differ on their behalf. If a product that is supplied by a 3rd Party (in this case Microsoft) adversely affects the operation of your company's product, I think you have every right to cancel the product until (or if) it's proven stable - especially if it is your company (and not the 3rd Party) who is responsible for Support.

Dell's model is flawed. Issue a product that is problematic to users who may/may not install it successfully (and most that order it will install it, in wild hope) and then accept that your Support chain and Reputation will take a negative hit.

The native installation of the OS seems to have a better success rate (ActiveSync 4 not so much) and so this is not surprising. Manufacturers - including Fujitsu-Siemens - still seem to be going ahead with this roll-out. It is the upgrade (which Dell and MS made seem initially to be simply a matter of course) that has been extremely troublesome and while Dell maybe busy trying to distance themselves from upgrading or putting out the fires in regards to that, some manufacturers simply see its not worth the trouble.

I'd like to upgrade too (I bought my X50 the last week it was available and didn't return it for a X51 because of the assured comments on the ease of upgrading as suggested by Dell) but I don't want to fight with it, I don't want a brick and I don't want to wait for Dell to take responsibilty for the problems.

I've been using WM2005 for 7 days now.
1. Upgraded to Active Sync 4.1 from 4.0, the syncing is more stable now. Still has some times when the Axim is placed in the USB cradle and no sync happens but when I take it out and re-seat it, ActiveSync runs then.
2. Active Sync is still a "persistent" program, runs in the background all the time. I have the 2200 battery so I can wait and charge it once a day.
3. 512 MB Sandisk CF card disappears once in a while, requires a soft reset to make it reappear.
Some problems but the benefits of the upgrade are more favorrable to me.
1. Wireless works better.
2. Better security for the PDA.
3. Contacts and Calender work better and are more convenient.
4. Better memory utilization for programs and files.
One thing I do wish, that Microsoft get rid of the dialup modem crap, error reporting, and media synching with WMP (DRM stuff, poorly implemented, not much use these days)

I don't see Microsoft as 3rd party on Pocket PCs. Technically these are Microsoft devices. Flip your unit over and on the back it says "Powered my Microsoft Windows" or "Microsoft Windows Powered." Microsoft has a vested interest in these devices. How many OSes are there for desktop computers (PC version) and how many OSes are there for Pocket PCs (not Palm)? These devices were designed for Microsoft's OS; they were designed to work seamlessly together. I have been using WM5 since 10-31-2005 with no major problems.

I have to agree. I've only been using it for about 36 hours, but I have had no major problems either. Yes, some of my software doesn't work yet, but that is the price to pay for early adoption. The problem is the same everywhere. The people who have problems are the ones who post the most. Those who aren't experiencing problems aren't here complaining, they're out using their Axims! Is it perfect? Nope! Did anyone really expect it to be?
