Upgrade CDs Arrived. Got free RPV upgrade!
Got the MWM5 upgrade CDs on the 7th, a family member just gave me the CDs today. Wasn't planning on upgrading anyhow. Too many issues, and don't want to be in that boat. The % chance to get a non-problematic installation and success isn't all that high. Seems like everyone has issues somewhere.
I browsed the two CDs, couldn't find a stand-alone Voice Command install file, but did find one for Resco Picture Viewer, which installed nicely on MWM2003SE. Looks like the rest of the programs are demonsstations or trials. So just got one application upgrade out of the deal. Now to wait for all you unpaid unknowing alpha/beta testers to get all the kinks worked out before I even think of upgrading. Weighing the pros and cons, the only two advantages I see is persisent memory (uses up the read/writes faster) to get slower performance, and longer battery life. Cons are too numerous to list, besides the fact if the Axim is turned off, it is really off, and no more alarms on schedules. Batteries are draining fast I hear, so much for longer battery life. Crashes, freezes, program incompatablities, more upgrades for software, beta version of software till MS/Palm/Dell decide on a happy medium. No thank you. MY Axim is working 120% above effeciency. No issues. No crashes. no battery drains. No complaints. No worries. Why make things worse? Do I have "glutton for undue punishment" written on my ass?

I recieved my upgrade disk today and I have no plans to install anyting soon. As you stated I will wait for all the really committed users to identify the issues, pester the dickens out of Dell and when all of the bugs that are possible to fix are fixed then I will consider upgrading. I just don't see any advantage for me at the moment.

I think I'll wait for WM5 ROM upgrade A04. That's usually when Dell gets things sorted out.

My Axim X50v is working perfectly, nothing wrong it at all. nearly all of the programs that I use are working 100%. I really enjoy the softkey features, extended battery life, and speedyness of menu popup's and programs. Sure the initial soft reset and program use is slow, but after all the icons and stuff caches up, everything is just as fast as WM2003se if not faster

So it is the initial installation that is slow. Makes sense. Not all my programs I just purchased is ready for Mobile 5. A few are in beta. I read the readme.doc file in the install folder. Says if you have Outlook 2002 to install it first. (I almost thought there was a new Pocket Outlook version!) Also read one of the two known issues of ActiveSync 4.0 is no backup/restore option available. - I do have a spare 128 MB SD card. I have a few things going on over the next week. Lots of tasks on schedule, and wouln't be too pleased to lose them. I'll see how things progress before/if I take the plunge. Why take the risk if one is happy now? Least I don't have to worry if my Sena case is compatible!
