I think that you've got it right. The setting is grey whenever you don't have a server, but the settings you changed to, while you "did" have a server, will persist. If you want to change the settings again, you have to follow the same procedure and temporarily create a fake server again.

Well I was jumping to the conclusion too fast.

I put my Axim on my cradle at home for it to charge and sure enough it started to synchronize every 5 minutes or so.

I recreated a fake server to check the settings and the setting in my Axim was to 'manual' synchronization.

Is there a setting for each profile I have to do?
For example at Home (profile #1), I sync different stuff than at work (profile #2).

Do I have to leave the fake server for the manual sync to be applicable?

I have another question: All of a sudden my desktop Active sync window is cut in half on the top of my screen .
I cannot move the freaking window because I cannot click and drag the top application window bar. Even the 'move' button does not move the freaking application window. The Activesync I have at home is version 4.1.

I really start to think that ActiveSync application is a piece of $hit :realmad: :realmad:

All I want is to put my Axim on its cradle for it to charge (like my Wife Palm) ONLY. Since the cradle is connected to the Pc via its USB port (I hate to have crawl under my desk to pull the plug everytime)

I hope someone can help me out. Everything was doing fine but now, these inconveniences are getting on my nerves.

Thanks all and my appologies for the frustration.

Stupid Question

I think I can help you with these two. Disabling Error reporting did not seem to have an effect on my processor speed, but disabling automatic syncing (and activesync startup) did. The new activesync is a dog, even worse than it was on WM2003SE and makes my x50v almost useless while running. I will list the steps to disable it. Note that you will still be able to sync, but AS will no longer start up on it's own.

1) Start up AS on your x50.
2) Tap the menu tab/soft key and tap "Add Server Source"
3) Configure a server source with a dummy IP address, user id, password and domain name; these do not have to be real
4) Once configured you should have another sync source show up on your main AS screen...continue on.
5) Tap the menu soft key again and you should see that the sync schedule option is no longer greyed out.
6) Change your schedule from a timed automatic start of AS to manual under both fields
7) If you try to sync now, AS will try to contact your imaginary exchange server and that will take forever until it times out, so you can now delete the exchange server from your list of sync sources. Your changes to the sync schedule will remain and will survive soft resets too.

If you have a switcher app running (like vbar) you will find that when you close AS it will now stay closed and you should see a corresponding increase in speed.

Post some feedback and let others know if this worked for you. I am not really sure if this is what sped up my x50v but I know that it no longer slows down to a craw on a regular 5 minute schedule and AS only starts when in the cradle or when I start it for BT syncing.

This is a stupid question - but i am not familiar with Configure a server source with a dummy IP address, user id, password and domain name; what exactly do i need to put here? As you can see i normally do auto config - so i'm not sure what to put in for a dummy IP address, user id, password and domain name - please give me an example so i dont mess it up - i really want to stop AS from auto starting - and sync up every 5 min when i dont want it to - TIA Paul-Z

Sorry - I played with it and got it to work by following you instructions - I'll wait and see - sync with computer went fine - i deleted the false exchange server from your list of sync sources - re made a false server just to see if settings were still on manual and they were!!!
Thanks - i hope i wont see AS as a running program again.
Will let you all know in a couple of days.

Still no AS after a couple of days - thanks to Invid

Hey MarcG
I often want only to charge - so i pull the power cord out of the cradle and connect the adater that was included from dell and charge - use my PDA with it connected this way too so that my battery stays fully charged.
You should have recieved an adapter piece with your purchase.
Hope this helps - I hate always putting PDA on th cradle - this is my work around for the sync issue.

Thanks for the tip dude. I didn't have any problems with battery drain, but this does increase my available RAM! So that is awesome.

Thanks Paul-Z

I came to the same work around.

I still have that stupid ActiveSync application window where the top half is off the screen. So, I do not have access to the pull down menu, nor everything that's above the 'show/hide detail' button.

Looks like the default center screen position got screwed up and now Window locates the application window 'center' on my top of the screen.

I will re-install the Active 4.1 and see if that fixes it.

Stll using AS 4.0

I'm not sure what improvements were made with AS 4.1 - but after reading about your issues I'll probable stay with 4.0 - it seems to work fine - although not as fast as the good old days when there was a direct connection - I can't figure out why MS would make AS go through a network connection - that made me pull my hair out at first because all that would happen was it said connecting......but never did until I changed my network connection settings. I don't know what the new connection does other than make it slowere and more of a pain in the ass!!!
Thats MS for you.
Good luck with the re-install - if it doesn't work I suggest going back to 4.0

I tried this fix. It seems to be working. I haven't seen ActiveSync starting itself again ----for the past several hours. Will keep an eye on it, but it looks very promising. Thanks again. :)

Still no AS after a couple of days - thanks to Invid
PS I have not had a power button issue since the AS work around?
Don't have processor at max performance either it is set to auto.
So far so GREAT!!!
Does anyone else have only about 32MB of memory after a soft reset - I read about RAM somewhere on this site and how about 15MB are used for MS but there is no phone on the X51v and that used about 2mb and I have 17.59MB used from the start???
Anyone else at only 32MB of free RAM or do I have a RAM hog somewhere?

This fix works quite nicely for preventing AS from starting on its own every few min, but it did not seem to solve all my problems. It did not prevent my X50v from slowing to a crawl and having the processor speed always pegged at 624MHz. My X50v doesn't always slow down w/ the processor running at max speed like that. But it was my understanding that this fix could eliminate this issue from some other threads I was reading. There must be something else going on.

It also does not seem to solve the issue of my X50v turning on by itself every few minutes when docked. Is that a separate issue? I tried everything mentioned on this forum for dealing w/ that w/o success. It drove me crazy enough that I eventually decided to downgrade back to WM 2003 SE. Now, at least, everything runs smoothly as I remembered. The processor usage and AS turning on my PDA when docked were starting to get to be too much after 1 week of that.

I am about to write a book about ActiceSync and bad words . This is truly a piece of crap. Thousands on miles away from user friendly, stability, easy and convenient to use.

Right now I cannot establish any connection with my 2 PC. I have deleted the AS (I would like to add an "S" to that acronym but I will control myself) and reinstalled it with no luck.

I hav to run to my staff meeting now but will try to provide more info on what I am going through right now.

P.S. A new PocketPC running MS and AS is out of the Christmas list for my wife until further improvement.
