I've tried this fix with two X51V's. It does not work for me. My X51V keeps trying to sync every 5 minutes without fail. The two peak and off peak sync settings are set to "Manually" when the dummy server is present. After deleting the dummy server, the "Schedule" menu choice is greyed out again. Adding a dummy server again confirms the sync schedules are still set to "Manually". What gives?

Could it be Avantgo? Pocket Weather? Activesync itself? Will the log file tell me?

Very cool tip!!!
I believe alot of the issues with my axim have something to do with activesync, because I seem to have alot of the weird problems surface after I have finished syncing with my pc. But if I do not sync it for a day or two it seems to work without any issues.

Firewall?

I hav to run to my staff meeting now but will try to provide more info on what I am going through right now.

P.S. A new PocketPC running MS and AS is out of the Christmas list for my wife until further improvement.

Do you have a firewall installed on your computer? If so, does your firewall allow ActiveSync to act as a server on the network? If not, ActiveSync 4.x won't work due to its new fake network card design. (if you haven't noticed already, ActiveSync creates a new network connection for use with PocketPCs and uses this connection to communicate with the PocketPC via TCP/IP) I found this out the hard way after not allowing ActiveSync to become a server on the network...

Hope that helps someone

I also have a X51v and am trying to disable activesync but don't know how to do Invid's last step "delete the exchange server from your list of sync sources". Could someone step me through that please. Cheers and enjoy your entry into 2006, it doesn't come that often.

Hi hoochimagoo,
I guess that you did all the steps leading up to needing to delete the exchange server from your list of sync sources - here is how you do it - open active sync - start-programs-active sync
At the Right Bottom is Menu - options - now you will see the exchange server and the Windows PC as the two choices - tap on the exchange server and at the bottom hit delete - that will remove your fake server - this fix will not effect the way your PDA syncs with the the computer. Thats it I hope it helps - read below before you attempt this.

PS - make sure that you that you changed peak times and off-peak times to MANUALLY - also at the bottom of the page is an Adjust Peak Times link - I turned off All the Peak Days and set my start time to 8:00am and end time to 8:01am - have not had active sync turn on since. Do this before you delete the Exchange Server because after you do the Schedule will Grey Out and you won't be able to make the changes unless you re-make a fake exchange server.

Also I turned off the error reporting - Start-Settings-System-Error Reporting (Disable Error Reporting)
And I also turned off the Time Out Option - Start-settings-Today and at the bottom hit ITEMS - and at the bottom UNCHECK the Today Timeout.

With these fixes most all of my problems (ie. no responce to Power Button and AS always going on) have been fixed.

Good Luck - hope this helps - Later Paul-Z

Thank you Paul-Z, that was very helpful. I also took your advice about turning off the time out option although I don't really know what that does. The disabling the error reporting I didn't turn off at present. Could you briefly let me know why you did these last 2 steps? Much appreciated.

The Time Out being turned off - I've found helps with the Power On issue in which you need to do a soft reset in order for the AXIM to respond to the power button, and I've read on this site that the Error Reporting being turned off increases performance overall - Actually cant recall exactly where I read this but when I first had issues with my new AXIM I looked at alot of threads on this GREAT SITE.
I had to do 4+ soft resets a day before the Time Out and the Error Reporting thing and now almost never need to do one except to clear up some RAM - with use of programs the RAM total will go down from the ~ 30MB that you start with.

PS - if you want a GREAT program that is easy to use and has METERS for battery, RAM, ROM and cards - with 1 touch icons on the Today Screen - check out iLauncher at http://www.sbsh.net/products/ilauncher/
I really like this program - uses very little RAM resources.

Can anyone explain what the Today timeout does? I've often wondered, but I haven't been able to discern any change in behavior when I change the value (but hadn't tried unchecking it).

Thanks ... Mike

The Today Timeout basically takes your PDA back to the Today screen - after no use for X amount of time - ie if you were using some program and turn off your PDA while it's running (so that when you turn your unit on the program would be displayed - like map directions...) The Timeout would return you to the today screen after X amount of time being off.
I have equated this function to problems with power on not responding and needing to do soft resets to turn on the PDA - after turning Today Timeout OFF have not had this issue - now when I go to turn on my PDA - It turns ON
No Hard Facts for the issue fix - just my observation and experience - with Today Timeout OFF i don't have to do soft resets nearly as often

Hmm interesting I have my AS on manual and also I have turned off Today timeout but I did this per my preference when I got my PDA and not to solve any problem. It could explain why I've never had any of the problems listed on this forum with regards to power on or CF dissapear. Others have left BT on and I leave that off on my PDA, so I can't say anything about that.

Thanks again Paul-Z for your excellent advice. I am new at the PDA game so I am also experimenting with different software I become aware of through this very helpful site. I will be trying the ilauncher and pocket breeze software soon. I recently put the Magic button and Calcnote on my X51v and find them both quite useful. Being free is also a bonus. I also tryed the pocket plus but didn't find it that useful to my needs at present, may be in the future when I use more of the other functions. Sorry for rambling. Regarding Activesync, once doing as you said I am not having any trouble with sync'ing with my PC which I'm very happy about.

Thanks Paul, I would never have guessed that. I thought it either determined how far ahead the Today screen displayed, or for how long after the end of an event it would continue to display on the Today screen.

I guess I never left it alone for 4 hours to notice this behavior, other than overnight when Sprite does a backup and reset, leaving it in the Today screen.

Thanks ... Mike
