ActiveSync always on fix by Invid
Thanks to Invid, my AS is no longer starting on its own!
:approve:
I think I can help you with these two. Disabling Error reporting did not seem to have an effect on my processor speed, but disabling automatic syncing (and activesync startup) did. The new activesync is a dog, even worse than it was on WM2003SE and makes my x50v almost useless while running. I will list the steps to disable it. Note that you will still be able to sync, but AS will no longer start up on it's own.
1) Start up AS on your x50.
2) Tap the menu tab/soft key and tap "Add Server Source"
3) Configure a server source with a dummy IP address, user id, password and domain name; these do not have to be real
4) Once configured you should have another sync source show up on your main AS screen...continue on.
5) Tap the menu soft key again and you should see that the sync schedule option is no longer greyed out.
6) Change your schedule from a timed automatic start of AS to manual under both fields
7) If you try to sync now, AS will try to contact your imaginary exchange server and that will take forever until it times out, so you can now delete the exchange server from your list of sync sources. Your changes to the sync schedule will remain and will survive soft resets too.
If you have a switcher app running (like vbar) you will find that when you close AS it will now stay closed and you should see a corresponding increase in speed.
Post some feedback and let others know if this worked for you. I am not really sure if this is what sped up my x50v but I know that it no longer slows down to a craw on a regular 5 minute schedule and AS only starts when in the cradle or when I start it for BT syncing.

I did this yesterday. I wasn't having any speed issues though. What it did for me was increase the battery life when in standby. Before I lost 40% battery in 8hrs. Last night I lost 1% in 6hrs. Too early to tell yet, but I have not had any trouble getting the X51v to turn on since. :)

I appreciate the fix. I did it and it worked exactly as said. FYI, some have asked why the "schedule" is grayed out. It is active only when you sync wireless (or when you have a server source - fake or real) that would be a wireless sync. In other words, if you sync only via usb, the ability to alter the sync schedule isn't possible yet without this workaround.

Glad to see that you guys have found this tweak useful. I noticed that AS was keeping my x50v pegged at 624Mhz while it was open, whether syncing or not. Closing it sped up my axim considerably with increased battery life as a nice side effect.

I'm confused about this "tweak". I've been becoming annoyed with AS starting and doing stuff on my system -- I think it has been causing sounds to be played while in standby mode.
But the reason why I haven't adjusted the schedule is because I actually do want my PDA synchronizing with my exchange and IMAP servers etc. In fact the instructions say to put in a dummy server but I actually do have a real server. But does this tweak affect syncronizing when in the cradle? I still want the PDA to get up-to-date with the servers when connected. Certainly I don't want AS running when there is no network connection, and if doing this tweak stops AS from running but disables auto-sync when WiFi is on I can certainly live with that as long as I can hit "send/receive" from messaging to sync manually.
I haven't really noticed a fast battery drain, but then again I usually have PDA on all day connected to PC except for when I'm not at my desk, and at night AS is set by default to run only 4 hours anyway so usually I don't lose more than a few percent of battery overnight.

gillius,
As long as you only sync with the server manually (when first placed in cradle or wirelessly by selection) , the hack will not cause harm. If you want it to sync automatically by a set schedule, you will have live with the bug.

Thanks! This also appears to work on the x51v, although I'm not sure I've noticed AS-related slowness. Now I just need MissingSync or PocketMac to come out for WM5, so that my Axim can take advantage of hourly Bluetooth syncing initiated by my Mac. :D
BTW, can I ask a quasi-OT question? If a BT sync is initiated from the computer side, does the Axim have to be "awake," or can it wake on Bluetooth?

This hack seems to have solved my turning on issue. Before I applied the hack, I would have to soft reset my unit about 5 or 6 times a day during the week, never had the problem on the weekend. So, I applied the hack and saw that the default schedule is set for Monday through Friday. AHA!!!! it's all starting to make sense. I changed it to manual and I have not had to perform a soft reset to turn the unit on for two weeks. Thanks to whomever posted this hack.
Finally, I can use my PDA properly without getting frustated and performing a soft reset 5-6 times a day at work. Maybe you should sell this solution to Dell and/or Microsoft.

cool
When I first loaded up WM5 I was impressed with how fast it was responding - quite abit faster than 2004SE however after my first successful active sync a few days later at work the X50V was suddenly sluggish (15sec to pull up the settings screen) and I had constantly low battery life. Looking at the processor speed seemed to show that it was always pegged at 624mhz in automode.
I figured that a hard crash shortly after my first active sync had left a rouge process running sucking up clock cycles. Looks like it was AS.
I think this may have fixed my issue.
Thanks
Ron

actually I take that back, after using it for a while last night I now see that autospeed still pegs the processor even with no apps running. Only slows down after soft reset. Still really sucks batteries in this state.

Ok!
Just one question: How do you delete the funny server settings?
Thanks

Got it. But now the schedule button is back to grey.
I deleted the ActiveSync program from running and will see if it turn back on by itself.
Thanks and sorry for the quick request. I should have look more on how to delete the server settings.
