Well, a week after installing WM5 it finally killed my Axim. After installing WM5 I had to do a soft reset most times just to get it to turn on. It was really slow but usable. The only benefit I could see was that my BT connection finally worked.
Last night I went to reinstall 2003SE and there was no power at all. It obviously turned on and the battery ran out as I had just charged it. I charged it and now it hangs on the 'Dell' blue screen. I have done multiple soft resets, hard resets, and pulled the battery and nothing works. I can't even turn it off now. I am on hold with Dell right now to get a replacement. So sad....

I had an identical problem. The progress bard gets to about a 1/4 inch from finishing and just stays there. There is another thread on this problem with one person indicating that it might take 20 minutes to complete, but I've left it try for hours without sucess and hence RMA'ed.

I just upgraded my X50 to WM5 with no problem.
You have to be patience and follow the exact instructions on your PC. You will be instructed to HARD RESET your Axim twice. The last hard reset will process will take around 10-15 minutes.
