Total Disaster WM5 - EVERYTHINg lost

After following recommendations made in this forum and after several stumbling blocks, I finally installed ActiveSync 4.1 and WM5 a couple of days ago. I had thought that I was going to post the pitfalls I came across and how I resolved them so as to help others. After installing all of my software I had some additions to make to the "doesn't work" and "partially works" lists. Overall, despite too many soft resets, I was reasonably satisfied with performance and had no battery drain problems. However, tonight TOTAL DISASTER struck.

I was in the process of removing SPB Pocket Plus 2 of which all functions were not working properly. It only removed partially via Settings / Remove Programs. So, I decided to try removing it with ActiveSync. After 10 minutes it was stuck on "Removing SPB Pocket Plus." So, I removed the X50V from its cradle, did a soft reset and then found DISASTER. The only item in the pull down list when hitting START was MSN - no programs, no settings. After putting it back in the cradle, it would not SYNC. Severl soft reset more did nothing. Then I discovered that my CF card had been completely erased and my SD card contaiedn only the mail attachment files. It had been full with about 25 program (and unfortunately the backup files created several times using "Data Backup" while installing everything).

The fact that all data had been lost on the CF and SD cards was verified by accessing them via external card readers.

I was successful in restoring the X50V to an "empty" virginal state via a hard reset. However, I'm not sure I trust this thing enough to manually put everything back on and use WM5 and may decide to revert back to WM 2003SE.

I think Dell should recall all of the WM5 updates and refund everybody's $. Unfortunately, I used coupon credits that were expiring 0n 10/31 to by this update and it would probably do no good for me to try to get a "refund." I certainly could have found something else to use $40 of my credit toward!!!

Next time, make a backup on your computer. I foresaw the possibility of the update wiping my SD cards so I backed everything onto my computer's harddrive. I didn't think it would actually do it, but I guess your story proves it.

[QUOTE=Enragin_Angel]Next time, make a backup on your computer.....

I usually do this. I had done it just before installing WM5, but had not gotten around to doing it after the install. Next time, I'll do that after EVERY change except for the most minor.
