BT Stack on Axim x51v: Was it Dell's call?

I picked up an HP IPAQ HX2490 for my wife the other day. It's OS is WM5 as well, yet it comes with the same BT stack as that which was offered on 2003SE.

Secondly, the WM5 OS for the Ipaq is listed as Windows Mobile 5.0 - Premium Edition.

Were we shortchanged on BT capabilities with our 'non-premium' offering from Dell?

I am not saying that the Ipaq is a better handheld device. I just would like to know if anyone was aware of this Premium Edition labelling of the HP WM5 OS offering.

I just want my bluetooth capabilities back. Sigh.

The Dell version may have the "Premium" WM5, but I don't know really what the different versions are. Either on the CD or in the manual for x51v somewhere I saw references to WM5 Premium Edition as if that was what was on the x51v. But I've never heard of different "levels" of WM5, so maybe they are all "premium". The BT stack might be a 3rd party software. Dell does include 3rd party stuff with the x51v -- not everything that comes even on the PDA itself comes with WM5.

The WM5 cd that came with my x51v (the one with ActiveSync, etc, on it) also says "Premium" on it, though, FWIW....

There are diffrent levels of Pocket PC software, but nobody has ever released one that wasn't premium. The "Standard" version doesn't have the "Office Mobile" apps. Once again nobody has ever released a device with that version of the Pocket PC software.

When I was having problems paring my cell phone with my X51v I called Dell technical support and a rep claimed that Dell chose to go with the Microsoft bluetooth stack going forward because they believed it was better. I told him how much worse it was than the previous stack they used, but he seemed confident that Dell would continue to use the MS stack from now on.

Perhaps the motivations are financial or political rather than technical. That does happen a lot.

Could you post the registry details for bluetooth from your HP IPAQ HX2490 along with all the BT* files from the windows directory, I would like to play around with it on my X51V.

Anyway, IN WM5 I was not able to pair my phone, this was not recogniced, so, after several issues, I am going back to WM2003SE, and wait until Dell decide to provide a bug free OS WM5
