I just upgraded from a palm m505 to the x51v and WOW what a difference. There are some things to get used to however. I thought the palm device overall what much simpler, however way less features. I haven't installed many apps yet only because I am warry about the wm5 compatability. TCPMP is free and plays divx and other movies that media player won't. Pocket Informant is a way better PIM than regular outlook, maybe a little slower though. As far as syncing goes, so far I hate activesync the palm sync was way better, easier for some reason, maybe it's just because it's new to me, I don't know.
hope that helps a little.
I am new to pocketpc, in fact I still haven't recieved my PDA from dell (x51v).
I have been a Palm user since 2001 and have actually never used a pocketpc.
What software is essential?
With the x51v does in stalling to the ROM affect what apps i can run in the future or is the 64MB SD RAM good enough to do the job?
How different is syncing with a PPC than a Palm?
Thanks for any help you guys can give. :)
You will find that installing apps on Palm usually requires a drag and drop operation of the file to be installed whereas pocket pc will usually come in a .exe package. Also, there is a program on Palm Desktop that allows you to manage contacts, calendars etc and this is done via outlook on your desktop for PPC. The hotsync button is not available on the cradle but your PPC should sync by itself once it is placed in the cradle. You will not have to stay in a "Sync Screen" for PPC while it is synchronizing so you can still use it while it's in the process. It doesn't matter where you install programs they will all run fine except programs that explicitly tell you to install to the system memory. Programs are relatively larger on PPC/
I ordered one for my wife and it took nearly 2 weeks. After she got hers I ordered one for myself and it took about 5 days, 2 of which were the weekend.

I recently moved to a X50V from a Palm PDA myself. Thread here.
I found that like Datebk5 on the Palm, I needed a PIM enhancement on the PPC, so I got Pocket Informant.
On the Palm, the standard application launcher left much to be desired, so I used ZLauncher; on the PPC the Today Screen is the equivalent. I installed Pocket Breeze and iLauncher. I use Magic Button to control applications (Windows Mobile does not actually CLOSE; only MINIMIZES, unlike Windows desktop).
I have a 2GB CF and a 1GB SD in my PDA at this time.
Hotsync vs ActiveSync? Sigh.
Sprite Backup Premium. Essential.
Actual day-to-day usage? About the same between Palm and PPC. Ease of installation, customization, backup/recovery? Palm hands down. Hardware capabilities? PPC hands down.
I also have just moved from a Palm to the X51. Question: On the Palm there are shortcuts for entering things like the current date/time in a note. Is there some way to do that in outlook??

If you use Pocket Informant, yes. I set up Button 3 to be "PIAlarmNotes". There is an icon that looks like a clock that will insert a Date\Time stamp.

I, too, have just completed the jump to an X51v from a T3. First PPC owned; long time Palm user (started with Palm Pro in 1999).
So far, here are the "essential" adds I've had to place onto my X51v:
1. SPB PocketPlus: for task management, mainly (but it has several other nice features as well). Also like Magic Button but found PocketPlus to be just a bit snappier on my system.
2. SPB Diary: for useful today screen management
3. Resco File Explorer
I'm about to add some system utilities: evaluating SKTools and MemMaid. Also want a better backup utility. SKTools has one and I am waiting for Sprite Backup to have a WM5 version.
