I have not seen a freeware app. But SPB Pocket Plus is a really good app. I was hesitant sending the money but Im very happy I did. Its 15% off now at pocketgear with this coupon: msft685241 I think its also worth 5 rewards points at SPB so you can also get a free game.

BTW, it just won the pocketpc mag best software award.

yea but I didn't particulaly like sbpplus a while back so I bought PocketBreeze & Ilauncher & PI.
buying SBP plus as will is a bit of an overkill just to get a safemode app

anyone know if I buy sbp plus, can I just install the safemode bit, and leave all other spb options dissabled?...

SafeMode by Monocube (freeware) was looking into making the app WM5 compatible. I haven't heard that he was successful with it yet.

As for PP. You can disable all the other "modules" except for SafeMode if you want, but you still need to install the rest of it. At least you can install it to BIS or an external card now.
