Upgrade to WM5 - my experiences...

Axim X50v
Hardware version: A06
Software version: A01 - WM5
1GB SD card
1GB CF card

Yesterday I took the plunge and upgrade from the A04 software ROM to the new WM5. The actual update process went smooth with no surprises. :)

As soon as WM5 came up on the device, I was unable to get AS to connect the Ax to the PC. The Ax was recognized by the PC, but would just get stuck at the "acquiring network address". This drove me nuts for a couple of hours until I figured it out. I had turned off the "DHCP Client" service within XP and it turns out that service is needed to actually assign the IP to the network connection that the Ax creates when it connects via AS 4.0. It would really be great if Microsoft and all of their infinite wisdom would actually give us users some documentation about the changes in AS from version 3.8 to 4.0 and to actually have some technical specs on their knowledgebase as to the inner workings of AS - but I guess that is asking too much of them.

Anyway, I finally overcame the connectivity issue and proceeded to apply the tweaks Solsie has provided to us and began to install software. Here is a list of what I have installed and is actually working:

PocketPlus (with Today plugin showing battery, but w/o the battery bar at the top of the screen)
Pocket Informant
Beta Player (I still cant get used to the other name)
x50mix
Pocket Player
Resco File Explorer (w/o the Today plugin)
Tweaks2k2.net

Last night I left the Ax off the cradle all night and had 0 battery drain. :approve:

Issues I am still experiencing are:
1) Unit still sluggish at times even though I have applied the registry settings to increase the cache values. Changing these settings did make an improvement, but it still seems a little slow at times.
2) AS is determined to turn on the device when it is in the cradle. How do you get the unit to stay OFF while it sits in the cradle?!

So far I can live with the new OS and will continue to install and test software. I do wish that both Dell and Microsoft had spent a little more time in the labs testing things before they rolled this out, and they need to provide a lot more documentation for us geeks that like that tech stuff... :)
