Question Revert from WM5 back to 2003 SE

Hi all, I got my Dell CDs with WM 5 for my Dell Axim x50v yesterday.

I loaded up the new OS, and was astounded at how flaky it is…Hard & soft reset at least 20 times yesterday evening…

So I now want to revert back to 2003 SE, but am having problems doing so.

When I run the Dell utility (AximUpdate.exe) to put the 2003 SE A05 image on my device, it launches SSUServer.dll, then EnterBootLoaded.exe, but when I click ‘Yes’ to allow EnterBootLoader.exe to run, the device shuts down and won’t boot again. I need to perform a hard reset to get it alive again.

Has anyone successfully reverted to 2003 SE from WM 5 on an Axim x50v?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi,
I too was getting too annoyed with WM5. Waited sooooo long for the disk and then is crunches my system down to a crawl, introduces debilitating AS errors, and multiple other bugs now well documented in forums like this one. I tried all the workarounds, hacks, and registry edits that people have posted but with no real success in making my Axim as usefull as it was with WM2003. So I jumped ship. :bang:
Now - on to your question (:soap: sorry for the rant -- it's been a very frustrating week trying to live with WM5 -- it seems Dell released it before it was 'fully cooked.')
I downloaded the R111630 file, unpacked it to c://dell/drivers and then from there had to manually run the Axim Update application. the instructions on the website say a html window should popup automatically to start but on my PC it didn't so I had to search for it. Once I started running the update (revert) program, the rest was self explanatory.
Good luck with your revert. I think I'll wait until at least WM5 A02 patch. Maybe by then they'll have the push-email feature enabled too! :approve:

Thanks for the reply.

I was trying R106214.EXE (the A05 update).
I can't find the R111630 file you mention when I search on Dell.

Thanks all...it's a pity that Dell aren't intelligent enough to make it clear which one to use when reverting back to 2003 SE.

I'll give this a go!

Remember, when you downgrade back to WM2003, things might run incredibly slow. If this happens, try the following:

Once you've downgraded (and things get extremely slow), start to upgrade again. At the first reset during the upgrade process, test your PDA. It should run super fast again. At this point, you can either continue on with the upgrade or leave it back on WM2003. You'll probably have to end-task (cntl-alt-del) on your PC though if you decide to leave it as is, to get out of the setup box.
