Upgrade turns PPC into paperweight
A rather expensive paper weight. After a stupid ammount of hours getting the new OS to install, it finally did (running the installer off the CD and not through the autorun loops) and yay. Now, my computer won't sync with my PPC. They see eachother in the sense that they recognize eachother's names (WM_Tek) but thats it. No syncing or nothing. Now I have an empty PPC, no contacts or calender events, and I'm going bizerk. Im reluctant to go back to Dell chat, because they couldnt figure out why os wouldn't install. I know some other people had this problem, how did you fix it? And yes, I am using, and have been using (with 2003) ActiveSync 4.0

Make sure that you totally disable your firewall and re-boot the pc so that it is all cleared out. If that works they you have to search around here to find the site address that MS tells you the way to get around the problem. not sure where it is right now but a search should find it pretty quick. hope this helps

First and for most, let me say that you are my hero. Disabling Zone Alarm and Adwatch, restarting, and now... NOW is syncing as I speak... type. I spend HOURS yesterday trying to get this to work. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Now I have to figure out which app was blocking it, and how ti allow it.

Zone Alarm is your likely culprit. Active Sync 4.0 and higher uses TCP/IP now, so Zone Alarm will interfere with those connections.

Go here and carefully follow all the steps associated with the ZA firewall and you should be ok.

Wtf?!
Well, now I'm experencing wierd things, that led to the demise of my Axim. It's been ejecting out my CF card. I have to soft resset it to have it discover it again (unplugging and plugging card back in does not work). So that sucks. Then I noticed that my thigh was heating up. I took out my PPC, in the metal rhino skin case, and noticed it was burning up. I take the thing out, and it won't turn on... oddness. Take it home, plug it in, and WM had a memory error, hard reset to fix problem. LAME, so I do so. Now it says:
"To restore factory settings, press [contact button]. To cancel this operation, press [message button].
Note: All existing data is lost when you restore factory settings"
LAME x2, but whatever. I click [contact button]... click it again... agian... double click this time... hold it down... NOTHING. Now my Axim is frozen on this. WTF! just happened to my PPC!?
------
UPDATE
------
ALRIGHT! I don't know what I did, but now it reset. But I have no reason to believe that the CF card problem won't keep happening. Anyone got a solution? Is there a way to uninstall WM5 and go back to 2003, then do a fresh install of WM5 agian?

Yes, there is. Do a search of this site and the link it there. The link is to Dell, where an app to roll back from the upgrade to wm2003se. I had the same problem with the memory error/reset; and with the axim heating up in my pocket. After a few of those puppies, my axim would NOT reboot. Dell had to send me a replacement. When the replacement arrived, it had 2003se on it. I will not upgrade again until the fabled rom update is a reality. And, by the way, the replacement had rom A05 on it. VERY fast and VERY sensitive touchscreen. The replacement is great so I do not want to screw it up with a faulty OS.

I rolled it back, and reinstalled WM5 (worked this time, by avoiding AutoPlay and just ran the update off the CD and uninstalled ZA). Works great so far. Hope my CF card stays where it belongs.

Roll back link is here:

I hope there is a rom update link VERY soon. I liked WM5 when it worked, it just didn't work enough of the time.
