actually it's just above the bar that says "Calendar" and "Contacts" - it shows status of bluetooth and Wifi - but also some other icons that I don't want displayed - can this bar be customised?

This is the system tray.

You can "customize" it a couple of ways.

First, if you don't want the bluetooth and Wifi icons to appear if they are not in use you can go to the Windows Start Up folder and remove them (I always move stuff I don't want to autostart to a folder I create in Windows called "Disabled StartUp" incase I need them again).

Also, products like SBSH iLauncher actually allow you to create a toolbar that will appear there containing itema of your choice.

Yeah, iLauncher is a lot better than the default setup.
