It's a good thing I'm on vacation because the PDA alarm failed to go off (again).
Previously, the PDA had to be reset to bring it to life in the morning, and then the

thing tells me about the missed alarm.
But this time, there's something different: it's as if the screen was covered in a cross-hatch black/white mask. You can make out what's underneath, but not well. Start/Today repaints the screen and what's repainted is fixed. But not the task bar. Sigh.
Gee I might suspect hardare - this smells like video RAM decay overnight, or something like that. But I've NEVER had the problem with 4 months of 2003 SE waters under the bridge.
I'm running with the Storage Manager/FATFS patches for cache size to 0x1000 with flags 0x28. Seems to help performance.
Oh well, it's
Reset Time Again tm
It's a good thing my Sena case has a hole in it for the Reset button, since it's
Reset Time Again tm
frequently.
Now, I have to play with Flight Mode because Wireless and BlueTooth both came on, when neither was on before.
Once I get that back under control, I check to make sure that the CPU is going to Idle (104 Mhz). It's not. Settings/Memory/Running programs:

Active Sync is running again. Kill it.

Now the CPU settles down.
Off to my mother-in-law's place to visit. I use my under-development database of books to keep me from buying books that I've already read at the Paperback Shack. PDA works flawlessly. :) This is more like it.
I'm bored while my wife runs off shopping, so I spend a useless hour browing the registry, looking for something that might control RAM refresh time. No joy.
I really miss Spb Plus == I'd tried it under WM5 but it seemed like it was causing more problems than it was worth. But now I have to keep checking the Power settings to make sure my 2200 mAh battery has not been run down.
I've been running very minimal software on my WM5 for a few days. I'm not too happy with Dell about that - but since they came with a ROM upgrade for the X51, I figure that there will be one for WM5 on the X50v Real Soon Now.
One thing new is the latest version of Sudoku Master 1.5 from Real Dice. I like the new cross-hatch ability, even if it the thin lines are hard to see on the VGA screen. So, I go to show my mother-in-law how to play - and guess what? My PDA won't even bring up the Start menu to try. Frozen solid. :realmad: And it's not because the wind chill is -4 outside.
So, it's
Reset Time Again tm. Hmmm... the progress bar on the blue Dell screen is hung at 85%.
Reset Time Again tm
Same thing.
Battery removal/replace. Semi-hard reset, reset ... everything I try comes back to a hang during reboot at the same 85% point.
:headshake :pullingou

:stickpoke :throwcomp
Disgusted with WM5, I decide to go back to 2003 SE - but then remember that I'm TWIA (temporarily without internet access) to get to the download site.
So, knowing that it's going to be the third HARD Reset and reload everything, I decided to run the built-in destructive Dell diagnostics. Do you know how hard it is to hold the Power Button and the record lock, while at the same time pressing the Reset button? Anyway, the diags fail to locate anything wrong.
After reloading a bunch of things, I decided to leave the MSFlash patches out to see if they had any effect. But the PDA acted like it was running in molasses. After an hour of playing with it, I relinquished and went back to CacheSize 1000.
Oh yeah, :activesyn had to have its schedule reset again.
I actually managed to get a little development work done. Sure was nice to have the X50v to run my tests on...the emulator under VS 2005 Beta 2 is slow and takes a long time to cycle in a new image for testing.
So far so good.
In the morning, the alarm worked. But the problem is, I don't trust it any more. It will take weeks to get back my trust.
Somehow, I don't think my troubles with WM5 are over.
