WM5/x50v BACKUP

What is the best way to backup my stuff - do I have to use the default one as Sprite isn't WM5 compatible?

I've downloaded the trial version of Sunnysoft Backup Manager 3.7 which is claimed to be WM5 compatible and so far it's working fine. No documentation though, but cheaper than Sprite.

Have you performed a hard reset followed by a restore?

You can just use the built in backup, and store the image sur storage card.
Be patient, this might appear to hang in the beginning but just wait until completion. Unlike WM2003SE, when you run out of power, no hard reset occurs on WM5. So the only time you need to use the restore is for other reasons than power outage.

I have not had either program actually successfully recover my Axim after a hard reset. Both of them leave out settings and caused problems. Everything from my dial-up settings to my Wi-fi passwords were dropped. Strange things would happen like MS Reader losing it's activation and Pocket Informant opening on reset. So far I have hard reset at least 5 times and have had back up files each time. None of them have actually worked. each and everytime I have had to reload manually.

Not yet, too scared :-) I know I have to test that but I'm saving it for when I upgrade from my current 01 to the O5 ROM...

I have used the default built-ion backup on my x50v, running WM5, and I have done a hard reset and tried to restore from the SD card. Every time I got an error saying not enough memory. I did not install any programs prior to trying to restore. I finally gave up and reinstalled everything rom the PC. Has anyone else encountered this?

That is exactly what happens to me EVERY SINGLE TIME! What good is this program? I'm not running close to the max on memory. I'm only using half or so. What's the issue? I hate running around without the ability to recover from back-up.

Use the beta of Sprite backup. Other than not (yet?) being able to create an executable backup image like the old version does, and periodically not finding the CF card (which is not Sprite's problem) it seems pretty stable. I even managed to do a full restore from a backup.

Sprite have made one backup choice I personally don't really like, which is that they do not 'wipe' the system before restoring. The result is that if you:

1/ backup
2/ add new programs
3/ restore

then the new program (files) are still there, just the registry entries are gone. But other than that sprite is fine. I didn't try sunnysoft's yet. Can someone perhaps try this for us and report back?

well I did a hard reset/restore with sunnysoft and I can say, so far everything works just fine.

I had a 'white screen of death' then the unit would not soft reset, and luckely I had a backup from the previous night, and did a restore with no problems with Pocket Informant, Pweather, Ilauncher, wisabar2, wireless settings kept ok, all docs ok.

so yea, for me Sunnysoft backup worked with x50v & wm5.0

but wm5.0 is so flakey ( i've been running it for over a month now) and a few times it's been locked at the 'dell' startup screen but after several s-resets & battery removals it came back, but last time it didn't so resorted to h-reset & restore & am happy to say it worked for me.

I am now going to schedule a daily backup... until dell release the update which will hopefully address some of those screen lockups/memory problems I'm sure.

cheers, stevo.

Yeah, I don't like having a recent backup either. What a pain to reload everything. However, I may try the Sprite beta and see how that works until the ROM update and see if that fixes it. If the ROM update does not fix it, I may end up purchasing sunnysoft, since everyone seems to like it
