Question Cannot install Acrobat Reader on Axim x51v

Hi,

I'm a brand new PPC user.

I would like to install Acrobat Reader (for starters), but my Axim x51v (updated to rom A04) won't let me.

Whenever I try to install the reader version 2 (or the old one for that matter) my Axim tells me it's not a valid pocket PC application.

From reading on this forum it seems others are able to install the reader just fine, so what's going wrong ?

Second question : also on this forum I found Acrobat reader is a lot better readable in VGA-aware mode, but I cannot find a description of *how* to make Acrobat reader work in that mode (asuming I can get it installed, that is).

Also SE_VGA and OzVGA don't seem to work on the Axim x51v (Blue Dell logo until I do a hard reset).

Can anyone help me ?

Thanks,
Joeri

PDF Reader

Welcome to my world. Acrobat does not make a reader that is made for WM5.0. Cannot tell us when will be available.
Repligo sells software for WM 5.0 that convert PDF files to a Repligo file that can be read with a Repligo software reader.
Westek has ClearVue which is a PDF reader software that is not currently WM 5.0 ready but I contacted them and they said a
WM 5.0 version should be available in the next couple of weeks. If you email their customer support they will email you when it is ready - here is a link http://www.westtek.com/pocketpc/pdf/.
If you find any new info please post!

Thanks,

You need to run the install on your computer, not your PPC, it will install through activesync. I installed it on my x51v and it is running fine for me. Once you get it installed post back and someone will give you instructions on the VGA tweak.

Ken S is correct - the application you downloaded from Adobe is NOT the installer for WM or PocketPC - it's an installer which drops an Adobe folder in your ActiveSync directory, and in that folder is the CAB file that ActiveSync will try to install the next time you sync the device.

Just get the CAB file out of that directory and send it to your Dell - run that and install away.

Thanks both of you.
I installed Acrobat Reader yesterday evening.
Two problems though :
1- The icons (and other forms of images) on my Axim x51v corrupt after a while. Only a soft reset will get them back. This seems to be directly related to Acrobat Reader v2 being installed.
2- The text in Acrobat Reader is ugly, blocky (I hope the VGA tweak will do something for that, but I'll start a separate thread for that subject)

Clearvue will display PDF's properly. (Of course) it's payware.

Yea...if we want something that works...I guess we have to wait till Adobe makes a working version...oh well. Payware? I can't afford that right now...

Try this to force Adobe Acrobat to be VGA-aware. It will make PDF files appear better.

Doesn't that just make the whole device VGA instead of QVGA?

No, it makes the particular program it is applied to aware that it is running on a VGA device and allows images to be displayed in their original resolution, without pixel doubling. Try it, you will enjoy the outcome. :approve:

Huh...ok. Thanks. I will try it. You see...the problem I am talking about is the problem I had when I was able to install Acrobat. That was when I first updated to WM5.0. Then I reverted back to WM2003SE (and of course Acrobat works here). But I liked WM5.0 better so I switched back to WM5.0. But now I can't even get Acrobat installed. Everytime I try to get it installed, I get the error message on my PDA that says that the installation was unsuccessful. Looks like I got some work to do...

The VGA .mui file does wonders for Acrobat on a VGA Axim (the settings pages in Acrobat will be somewhat messed up, but they don't do anything terribly useful anyway, and this is the only cost of using it). And FWIW, I do not think I get any icon corruption...can you explain what that means in more detail, please? I have never really had any trouble with Acrobat. It installs without any complications, and it works all right, and absolutely stunningly with the .mui file mod. :)

I had the same problem. I found that erasing any files created by previous installs of Adobe Acrobat (including the User Guide PDF in your My Documents folder) fixed the problem and allowed me to reinstall Abobe Acrobat.
