I posted a question about this problem a while back and some kind person pointed me to the WM5 is here to stay! - WM5 Tips... thread.:) I tried the process listed near the bottom and set my ActiveSync schedule to Manually, but it didn't seem to help. I have my PC ActiveSync set NOT to open when the Axim connects as well, but it does anyway.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?

I posted this previously re the "Drained Battery" questions however I believe it will also resolve your question.
I think more people would set up their Axim power button this way except that it is easy to miss the Power Button Tab because you have to right scroll to see it. Hope this helps!
"I think the best cure for Battery Drain is to program the Power Button to "Full Power Off".
Settings--> System Tab -->Power --> Power Button Tab --> Full Power Off
My Axim X51v will still take a charge but no surprise wake-ups to start anything running and cause drain!
If the power switch is set to "Full Power Off" it gives you the choices: (1) A light press of the button will not give you the full power off thus allowing for a quick restart. (2) Pressing and holding the button will cause a notification pop-up warning of a complete Power Off and asking for confirmation before it happens (almost idiot proof).
A much better situation than the drained battery surprise that many users are complaining about??? "
Still.. I strongly suspect it's not windows activesync's fault.
My problem seems to be that AS launches itself (on the x51v) whenever it detects USB so if that happens it starts-its-on-turning, so to speak. If we could perhaps have a 'disable USB' switch for the axim itself we'd be free of this stuff.

you're right, its actually both thier fault (the axim and activesync) the best way to do it, is once it is in the cradle, turn off activesync on both the pc and the axim, but that is generally really annoying,
so, a good way to go it, is to plug the axim into the dock and immidiatly turn it off, before activesync has time to load on either device.

there is a workaround posted here, it involves making a fake server, setting it to sync manually, then deleting the server... i can try to find it on this site if you want.

I tried it and the method didn't work.
What I am doing is that after the sync is completed, I disable the connection on my XP by doing "Start->Settings->Network Connections->connection for the Axim". After I do that, my x51v stays off. Then, I created a shortcut on my Launch Bar for this connection. When I want to sync, I simply click on this shortcut and it will enable the connection again(you need to have the Axim in the cradle and turned on). Let me know if my instruction makes sense.
I know it is annoying to do all these things. But, this is one of the easiest work around(the fake server is easier, however, it doesn't work for me).
Well in retrospect I don't really care toooo much if the axim's 'sortof on' while in the cradle. As long as the display isn't on I dont notice it too much. Plus 'standby' and 'on 105mhz'are not that dissimilar anyway.

but if it is on while it is on cradle, I think you might have a burned in(or whatever they call...persistent image or something for LCD) issue if you leave it on overnight.
I don't think burn-in will happen just with the LCD on.. I admit im not 100% sure on that theory, I admit. But in the end, lots of devices (think digital watches) are always on. I think the backlighting will be the main important thing.

I have the same issue... my axim wakes up and just sits on all night. I got sick of it (activestink) so I turn off my PC at night, & I have my axim setup to dim after a set period of time in case I forget to turn off my PC.

Remember LCD monitors run 24 hours a day and it takes many years before the cold cathode light burns out. I wouldn't worry about it, but remember that you can set the backlight to switch off on external power after x minutes.
