Mad X50: Cannot downgrade to WM2003SE, no German downgrade file available!

Hi all,

great great! I upgraded to WM5 on my German X50 around Christmas. I experienced the same problems as many people here: sluggishness, battery empty all the time, sometimes it only takes 3 hours (handheld is turned off). Plus I had a memory error today. I did not have to hard-reset the device but bad enough. After this memory error I was using Google quite a time to read that WM5 on a X50 isn't the best idea. I even called Dell where a not very helpful guy told me that there could (that was when I started to cry! ) be problems with a X50 and the WM5 update. He was not able to offer me cash back for the upgrade I had to pay (about 30 US$) and simpley told me that I better downgrade. He then sent me an email.

I was really thinking about downgrading but this isn't possible! The URL I got points to a English update file (website shows up in German language). I then started searching for a German version when I noticed that I cannot downgrade from German to English. Nothing, no German downgrade file available!!! I hate Dell. I bought the handheld there, I bought the upgrade there and I get offered nothing than a useless downgrade file after the upgrade left the handheld nearly unusable. GREAT!!!

Is there anything I can do making WM5 working better on my handheld?

Will there be updates where the problems get fixed? And when?

I read that it is possible to install WM5 on a X50 without getting any problems after that:

Newsgroup via Google
WM5 - I'm sold!

It seems that the guy made it. Hmmmm. I write him an email but did not get an answer. I'm staying tuned.

Well but I cannot downgrade so I cannot test what he suggests.

Has anybody any idea for me?

Thank you!

Martin

Have you tried all of the 'trick' from here on the site? One other that gets missed sometimes is whether you have used Odyssey? If it is running even in the background it will make the unit repsond very slow when turning it on. If you see the little sailing ship icon in the toolbar then open it and hit exit. Other problem things are anything that monitors the battery on the Today page seems to drain the battery.

Well to be honest, I did not read everything in this forum. Or is there a special thread where everything is brought together? From Google I know some things but people are not sure.

Odyssey is installed but I never started it.

No, I never saw this icon.

This is something I wrote when searching Google. But the people were not certain about that. I'm using Pocket Plus which shows the battery status on the Today page and on top of each screen. I turned both features off now (and am not very happy about that because this was one of the main features of Pocket Plus for me). BTW: Some people Google came up with did also think that the memory and flash card monitors also drain the battery. is this also true?

Try looking through this thread there is a lot of good stuff there. I have also seen where people are saying about taking out the sd or cf (can't remember which or both) cards to help with some of the problem. Sure hope Dell comes out with a fix soon. Although I have gotten mine tweaked to the point that it works pretty good and doesn't have much of a problem.

Thank you for that thread. I also found this thread and did what was in. I applied the fake server in AS, applied the I/O hack plus this CF-card hack (I did not experience problems with that) and I disabled the battery meter of Pocket Plus on top of the screen and as the little icon on the today screen.

At first it seemed to work but a few minutes later the same problem again. The Axim is reeeeeal slow and is running the CPU on maximum speed all the time. I turned it off and turned it on 15 minutes later, same problem. Now, 1 hour later the CPU goes down to 104MHz. Hmmmm what is going on.

Isn't there a programm where I can see which task is taking so much CPU? Like the Windows task manager. I only found task managers for WM where exactly this feature isn't there... :rolling:

I have inserted both CF and SD. On CF I have the games, on SD the navigation software. So I'll check both cards but I only can afford loosing the CF card until this update comes out.

Great that I do not use English like with all other clients and my server here. It just was annoying when I tried to get a English Axim here in Germany. So I think I'll have to wait long time before a German update will be released. BTW: Where can I check the version of the ROM? I think I saw A01 or A02 when upgrading but I'm not sure...

Ah thank you very much. Quite a n00b question... sorry... ;-)

ROM Version: A00 (10130500)
Language: DEUTSCH

Great, does this mean that I have the first version in German language or does this mean that this version A00 is the same version as the first English version A00?

BTW: My problems seems to be not as bad as before I applied the patches/hacks from those threads. CPU seems to be at 104MHz most of the time. But still the power consumption is very high. 6% from 9am to 11:30am without doing anything exept typing in one appointment. Plus (as described above) yesterday evening sometimes the handheld lags like hell and CPU is on maximum. After a while it goes back to normal.

Also I noticed that yesterday when I made a softreset the Axim bootet up and was trying to connect somewhere. The animated icon which was shown on top looks like if WLAN is trying to connect to an access point. Strange because WLAN was turned off. After another softreset everything was back normal. It was not the first time I noticed that.

Oh I forgot something - If the English ROMs are more up to date than my localized German A00 ROM: Is it possible to switch to an English ROM? I got an multilanguage upgrade CD from Dell so I don't think I'm violating any laws. Plus Dell cannot complain when I try to get back a usable Dell product which they made completly unusable by sending me this great WM5 CD. I'll have to call again and complain about the issue that there is no German rollback file and that it seems that I cannot get my money back for the upgrade CD. They should send me a X51 and get back my X50 plus upgrade CD. ;-)
