Update Windows Mobile 2003 SE to WM 5.0
Hi,
I want to update a x50v from Windows Mobile 2003 SE to Windows Mobile 5.0. I read a few forums about the update and there where a few problems. A lot of threads show problems with the performance or problems with running older software. I need to test our software running on Windows Mobile 5.0, but after testing i have to restore all the old data on WM2003.
Is it posible to backup all data incl. Windows to restore the original system after the update, like an image?
Will "Dell Axim X50v VGA System ROM Reinstallation from Windows Mobile 5.0 to Windows Mobile 2003 SE" works fine, so that i could downgrade and reload all the old backups and don't have any problems?

Get a copy of Sprite backup, backup, upgrade, test, rollback (as per the link you have), restore back up should work just fine. I'd also suggest doing a sync before you start, so that when you sync at the end of the process everything is up to date.
One the other hand there are always people here who would rest it for you if you ask :)

Actually, even Sprit won't do that one. When doing an upgrade like this one you really should load everything again. Of course your PIM (contact, calendar, etc) will be taken care of when you sync. But programs are better off reloaded. Also, since the memory is used differently you might want to put more programs on the ROM instead of a card. but that is the flexibility of the WM5 OS

Sprite will work fine as long as the backup they do on 2003SE is only to be used to restore once they roll back to 2003SE.
It would not be good (if it is possible) to use the backup from 2003SE on WM5. But it doesn't sound like that is what you want to do anyway So Jigsaw's post is what you want.

Wow I sure didn't read that one all the way. You are correct, it will work fine for that. Thought they wanted to do the upgrade then restore theh 2003 data on the WM5. sorry for the mis-information.

I would not advise you upgrade to WM5. I had nothing but problems and went back to 2003 SE and still having problems with Activesync. WM 5 seems to be another Gates mess. When I tried WM5 with Activesync 4.1 it thought I was using a different X50v every time I synced which was very annoying having to reset each time. I use many partners but it doesn't seem to work with 4.1. My X50v is still not the same as it was before the upgrade and downgrade. So be careful. Sprite backup will not work with WM 5 only previous versions. It will be a long time before I try to upgrade again. Dell has some fault in this as they don't warn you about the problems you are going to have.

You may want to read the post again. It says he needs it for testing and plans to go back to 2003SE.

I know this is off-topic so I apologize in advance, but the internet needs more people like bigdave240 who are willing to admit a goof and apologize. For added proof, see the current waterfountain topics.
Now back to topic.

I don't need to read it again. The point I am making is that it really messes up your X50v to do that. I upgraded then went back to 2003 SE and have had nothing but problems ever since.

Downgrading to WM2003SE should put it back to the original A05 ROM. Did you remove ActiveSync 4 and reinstall 3.8 after downgrading?
