It really depends on what you want to do with your Axim. In my opinion essential software would be :-

1. A good File Explorer. Resco 2005 is generally considered the best but it has become pretty expensive. Alternatives would be Advanced Explorer, which used to be free but now costs a few dollars and is virtually as good a Resco. It is also the only Explorer with a recycle bin. Another alternative is Total Commander which is free.

2. A good backup utility. Sprite is superb and has saved the day many times not only for me but for most others on this site.

If you want to use it as a PDA then either Pocket Informant or Agenda Fusion give you very flexible apointment, contact and task planning. There is not much to choose between them but PI seems to be the slight favorite. They are both somewhat expensive but well worth the money. Like most other software they both have trial version so that you can see if you like them and which suits you best.

Then the SBSH suite of PocketBreeze, ContactBreeze, iLauncher and PocketWeather are all excellent programs and very inexpensive. An alternative is SPB Diary.

Very useful utilities are SK Tools, MemMaid. Tweaks2k2 and Pocket Mechanic.

There is so much software available, much of it free, that it is difficult to know how best to advise you. But if you want anything specific just ask.

BTW Welcome to Aximsite. You will find it a mine of useful information and if you have any problems someone will undoubtedly be able to help you - but search the site first because there is a very good chance that someone else has had the same problem before you did.

Try styletap which is a palm emulator you can run on your x51v. This will allow you to run some of your palm programs.

Hi! thx a lot!

i have hear from resco file explorer! butmy question: you need another file explorer? is the default win-file explorer not enough?

and what you think about: Battery Pack Pro 2.1.2? good?

i have seen that there are soo many programs. but u now i want only install serious software, otherwise u fill your comp with so much programms and use only the half...

and u say they are all so expansive, I will find some programms on emule or other P2P network maybe for free?

Software

You can find some nice freeware programs on sites like www.freewareppc.com

One to place icons on the desktop is tdlaunch and there are others.

For a good file explorer, I use Total Commander from www.ghisler.com

For what it's worth, I use GSFinder instead of Resco. It is FREE and does most of the stuff Resco does... it can be tricky to find and install, but I'm very happy with it. Do a google for

GSFinder Universal

I am new here and new to the Axim 5x1 my last PDA was a Psion3c which lasted 7 years of loyal service but it was time to retire the old dinosaur.

Any way being completely new to windows Mobile I was wondering what are the best software titles.
In the PC world there are lost of resources and end-endless loads of information however, I seem to have had a hard time finding the right place to get the real scoop.

The software I am most interested are Firewalls, encryption and if possible personal webserves and databases, along with what you “insiders” consider the essential cant live without software.

I apologies in advance since it is a very general question, and since this is the software section it has probably been answered somewhere in fragmented sections which can take a lot of time to find.

One firewall I found with good reviews was “BlueFire” but with a price tag of 75$ buck it’s a bit rich for me.

Are the full free firewalls/software available for the Windows mobile OS ?

See "My PDA" ... It's pretty much up to date with what I use although not all of it is essential, most of it is used regularly.

Security Software (firewalls & Antivirus) is not really a requirement at this stage in the PDA evolution. Don't waste the money on it right now, because it just isn't necessary ... We are sort of like MACs in a way ... there's bound to be vulnerabilities, and I'm sure there are... but the percentage of targets, and the damage that could be done is marginal, so the virus writers for the moment are still targeted on the bigger population - Windows PCs.

My degree is in Information Systems Security, and I don't use AV or Firewalls on my PDA, because as I mentioned it is not necessary. Granted some people will label me a fool for not, but everyone has their opinion. Use a good wallet program to encrypt your informaiton that you need kept secure, utilize a strong password on that wallet file, and utilize SSL if you sync with a mail server. Disbale Wifi % bluetooth when you are not using them.

Other than that... relax and have fun! :approve:

This is excellent advice, also in my opinion, of course -- it has been hypothetically proven that a virus can be written for the PDA (because a 'harmless' virus was written a year or two ago), however, there haven't been any released yet. I would add that a few backups (one from a few days ago, one from a week ago, etc.) would also be a good idea. Really, if you are the unfortunate recipient of that first virus, you can simply hard reset and install the backup from before the implementation of the virus.

Exactly ... Unless someone comes up with some way to totally destroy the firmware (highly unlikely - but possible), recovery from a virus on a mobile platform is much simpler than recovering on a server based platform. I mean lets be honest here, recovering a desktop system isn't all that difficult either, but server based systems are the real issue when it comes to virus infection & exploitation. You can create a ghost (or other brand) image of a workstation and get it back up and running in 15-20 minutes. Unless you have something to the effect of a bare metal restore a server based system is much more difficult to recover quickly.

A Hard reset takes 1-2 minutes, restore from a backup takes another 5-10 ... 20 minutes of downtime - vs. $20+ for a piece of software that liekly won't be able to catch a zero day exploit anyway ...

Compare that to a server, which could cost $1 million an hour in lost revenue for a major corporation, it makes sense for them to buy the software. Client downtime is also important in those cases, but again, recovery is pretty quick if you prepared properly.
