RAM Emulator

My x51v does not have the memory slider bar that older wm2003 devices have. Is there is a program that can allow me to create a cache file in storage space to emulate having more program space?

WM5 doesn't have that because files are not stored in RAM anymore.
You don't want to take up RAM with files since you have less RAM than before.

Get a memory card instead.

Actually I think he was looking for the opposite. To use some of the Built-In-Storage as RAM to run more programs. Sorta like the desktop Window's swap file.

I think that it would run way to slow to be usable, but it is a good question. Anybody know?

Also might be a good way to wear out your Flash, given that Program memory is extremely dynamic... the faster Flash is only good for about 10,000 cycles. Not much of an issue for storage, but would last maybe an hour as Program storage.

Almost impossible. Flash ROM is about two orders of magnitude slower than RAM to write - and even read. As has already been pointed out, RAM contains dynamic stuff - program variables/objects on the heap, the stack etc. This would work only if you managed to map the most dynamic stuff to real RAM and "only" stored less-changing stuff in ROM. As some apps need dozens of Megabytes of heap (say, Cube - see my multiplayer game roundup at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/men...MPPPCGames.asp on it, or image editors - see for example http://www.winmobiletech.com/PICVIEWERS on this q), it would be practically impossible to do the mapping.

The operating system just doesn't support this.

I'm not sure this is true, for all types of flash. Like every computer-related technology, flash memory should be advancing at a blistering pace. Taken that WM5 uses the built-in flash ROM extensively, one might assume that the newer devices are built with a hardier Flash memory. I think also that it would be a good idea to free up RAM by caching inactive, running programs in ROM. I don't know if the OS would permit this, if it could be done with a 3rd party utility, through a shell, or what.
Don't quote me on the "hardier Flash" point, I am just theorizing here.

Sounds like you want a good old fashioned RamDrive...
... that takes me back.

I based the Flash life-span on a recent article in an IEEE publication (I get several, can't recall which). The number of flash-cycles before degradation has gone down as speeds have gone up. Speed has been the main improvememt driver. People tend to replace/lose the devices long before they hit the cycle limit.
