I don't worry about it. There aren't any viruses worth worrying about for the PPC platform. See this post for more info.

While, at the momement, I agree there is little risk of virus' on PPC; as they become more widespread and the connectivity increases it may become an issue - we all know how "secure" XP is

The AV I use is AirScanner and its free :approve:

They also do an encryption package as well

Question AirScanner

Leighjay: Although the download is free... the software and updates for one year is NOT.

Crawil: good article, thanks.

I have an Axim x51 (520 mhz) and have been trying various antivirus programs and haven't had much luck with them.

Bullguard BullGuard Mobile Anti-virus for Windows Mobile Pocket PC claims to work on Windows Mobile 2003 SE or Windows Mobile 5.0
https://www.bullguard.com/mobile/bul...pocket_pc.aspx

It installed alright. It seemd to be working alright but it was VERY slow to scan - escpecially mp3 files which could take several minutes each. The next day when I started my Axim I got a Notifcation Error Popup that the system couldn't execute Program Files\Bullguard\FileWatcher.exe - this made my system freeze and I had a lot of problems getting it started. I uninstalled it. However, the next day I also got this same Notifcation Error Popup (even though the program was removed). I tried to manually find this in the StartUP group but it wasn't there. I had to reset the machine and reinstall the settings that aren't restored to remove this.

Trend Micro™ Mobile Security v2.0 which claims to support "Dell Axim (various models)"
http://www.trendmicro.com/en/product...e/overview.htm

It installed OK but it blocked using the cradle sync/connection completely. Wireless worked fine. Removed.

The older PC-cillin for Wireless for Pocket PC Version 2 is from 2001.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/p...sp?productid=2

The pattern file included with the program is version 795 and the file date is 2000 and file size is 168kb. However the update offered as latest pattern file here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/v...irelesspattern
is version 351 with a file size of 93 kb and a date of 2004. Confused?

This program is free and works well and fast but is it usefull?

Anyone else have any experiance to share?

I've tried AirScanner & McAfee on my X5, they run...and haven't detected anything. Do they work? Did I have a virus? Is it too early to think about it? LOL

Again ... and it's been discussed again and again ... Viruses at this point are not a real problem because --- You can HARD RESET! Until someone comes up with a virus that is capable of destryoing the flashrom on the device and therefore making the system 100% utterly useless, the threat is easily handled. Naturally we are all concerned because of the threat against a regular PC, but once you come to terms with the fact that this isn't Windows... it gets easier to understand.

By nature the way that PPC's are built (embedded OS) the threat of viruses are pretty well mitigated by the hard reset factor. Granted you may need to restore PIM data and reinstall your applications (unless you have a backup like Sprite or Spb) but for the most part there is not threat.

Spend the money on a good backup software... you run a better chance of having to hard reset at a bad time than you do of having a virus problem.

IMHO. :)

It is, until you install it and it asks to update itself.....

As far as I can see the threat is to the data you have on a CD or SF card [X51 can use both] which can't be restored by a hard reset.
