Um, So has anyone actually SUCCEDED in downgrading on a x51?

this is the last post in the downgrade thread... can this be done? i am in the progress of downgrading (i really really tried to keep wm5, but it really made my x50v un-usable at the end). but i want to buy a couple of x51v devices for some presesntations... but wm5 is just too unreliable. any ideas if stable 2003 can run on them?

No, it doesn't.

Even if you did it illegally, it doesn't have a backup battery and you'd lose all your data anytime you take out the battery or the battery gets low.

I've only run my x51v for about a day, but its pretty stable... especially compared to the 50v. Take 21 day test drive. The two devices are quite different on WM5!

I've run the A06 ROM since it came out and my device has been stable. I only have a problem with my CF card disapearing.

I have read this statement quite a few times. It has always confused me. I have been assuming the new x51s use non-volatile memory, otherwise how does it keep the data after power loss? In which case, surely PPC2003 wouldn’t delete all the files on purpose just before the low battery, although you never know with MS, lol.

WM2003 stores information in RAM. RAM needs power to keep the information.

WM5 only uses RAM as a PC does, for running programs.
Everything else is stored in a non-volatile memory

WM2003 would use the RAM (also giving you very little space for storage) which would erase when the power is gone.

Thanks BrandenRussell, that makes a lot more sense. They do say assumptions are the mother of all f-ups.

This might partly account for the much slow performance of programs that read/write a lot of data on my WM5 x51 versus my PPC2003 x50.

Yes, the memory used by the X51 to keep the data from being lost due to battery is slower than other models use.

I don't notice enough difference to give up the benefits I get with WM5.

The real WM5 showstopper for me is Bluetooth printing. PrintPocketCE is not compatible with WM5. The "Beam" option in Word Mobile prints plain text documents, but not actual Word documents on my HP 450wbt.

Hm. I thought I saw them (or maybe it was a different print program) come out with a WM5 compatible version.
Could be wrong though.

Well, one of the big ones has already been mentioned, it doesn't lose data when the battery dies.

A benefit from that is longer battery life.

I really like the new look of everything (The Start Menu, softkeys, etc).

Word and Excel work better and PowerPoint is included.

GPS works much easier for me in WM5 than it does on my 2003 or 2003SE devices.

I'm sure there are many more that I can't think of at the moment.

Sadly no, from their website:
Quote:
Note for Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC users:
PrintPocketCE prints Pocket Word .PSW and Pocket Excel .PXL file formats. Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PCs use DOC & XLS file formats which cannot be printed by PrintPocketCE. There are no current plans to add this support into PrintPocketCE.
Can you think what the program was? I really want to be able to print straight via Bluetooth.
