Remove sd/cf card and get 2.5 mb extra available memory in wm5
Unfortunately, I would find it pretty hard to live without my memory cards - where else would I put all that Music/video and Quake Mobile

No, with WM5 you can get (and keep) 32-35MB if you're not running more than 4-5 Today Plugins, assuming 64MB of RAM, which is standard on the x51's....
No offense intended here so please don't take it this way ... but can you prove that? I just saw the memory card thing, so that might do a little, but my prior post showed 31-32 MB of free ram immediately after a hard reset (x51v) with no today plugins at all running. (I hard reset my device just to test it).
I can't imagine running 32-35 after the installation of any software since a few silently place listeners in startup...

That is what I was thinking - I will give some of your suggestions a try.
Do you use WBA2? If so, how do you find it as far as memory goes?
WBA2 will take anywhere between 800K-1.5MB with 2.5, depending on what theme you've got and how heavy the graphics are. This IS a factor - if it has a background for the start menu, it'll take more memory. If the buttons or textures or graphics are more than just a color and a border, it'll take more memory. If I drop it, that's around 1-1.5MB of RAM that's freed up.
Have you anything like SKTools or MemMaid installed? They've both got Running Processes lists which will tell you exactly how much memory is being used by various programs, including GWES.exe, services.exe, and various drivers.

Well, I could take a photo of an hx2490 that I can get my hands on right now, although most of the reviews I've seen indicate that the reviewers can keep 30+ MB of RAM free with various WM5 devices when idle (no programs outside of startup ones in background), including some Dell x51v's. I'll also ask if you have MemMaid or SK Tools installed - maybe you could see what processes are running at the moment? And which firmware version do you have? The later ones appear to be pretty stable, although I'm curious as to how much RAM is being chewed up by 'unnecessary' processes.
My personal suspicion is that some of the crash issues reported with WM5 are probably due to some of the extra stuff running in the background, which may be causing conflicts with various Today plugins... or poorly written programs with massive memory leaks.
I does appear that I am at the low end of available memory, but my X50v has always seemed responsive.
I am running WA2, Pocket Weather, and the Resco Today plugin. I am there is memory allocated to processes that MemMaid doesn't see. I didn't acutally do the math, but it doesn't appear to add up to "Total Memory (64MB) - Free Memory (15MB)"
You mean when I install programs, any programs, they are not installed anywhere in the ram? So then installing programs on a sd card is pointless, except for large files such as ebooks & other types of books, movies, music, etc.?
PS sorry to thread jack it is just that this bit of info would really really help me get underway with this dang pda...as I have been holding off looking for info on how and where to install programs, etc.

I installed WM5 on my Axim 50 Basic last night and after the install I had a little over 35mb free of program memory. I immediately did the fake server hack and have had no problems. I have 18 contacts and installed the Axim Diagnostic Utility off the CD. I checked it, opening and closing apps, checking settings ,etc., for over 2 hours. Checked it again this morning and I have over 34 mb free. No power problems or any other problems, knock on wood. It seems to be at least as responsive as WM2003se. My CPU setting is auto and it seems to stay on 208mhz most of the time. If I do a soft reset memory, goes back to where it was initially after I installed WM5, a little over 35mb.
