I have 28 available which is pretty pathetic considuring I always used to have 32 free with 2003se (not including the mandatory 8mb or so of storage memory allocation) and WM5 does not store files in ram.
I usually run with 32-35MB free, depending on whether I'm using the wireless or not. I suspect you've either got a LOT of junk running in the background, or else you've got too many Today plugins on your start menu...
Or that Dell screwed up the WM5 x50v upgrade, which is already a known issue here. :D The x51v doesn't seem to suffer from that type of problem though, at least not from what I recall.
I have about 28 after a hard reset on WM5. 23 with my today apps running.

Yea. Almost all upgraded x50v users say about 28 after a hard reset with nothing running, and x51v users say 32-35mb.

I assume this in on a Wm2003se device? The best I can see is about 31-32 MB on a WM5 device immediately after a hard reset.
Running with 17MB is pretty low I agree, and likely has a lot to do with the stuff in the background as you mentioned, but I think running on 32-35MB free on a WM5 device is nearly impossible right now.

No, with WM5 you can get (and keep) 32-35MB if you're not running more than 4-5 Today Plugins, assuming 64MB of RAM, which is standard on the x51's, as well as the HP hx2000 series... and pretty much every other non-upgraded WM5 devices I can think of, according to reviews. Upgraded WM2003SE devices are where this problem seems to come into play, and especially with the x50v machines as Dell buggered up the installation images. Either they're loading a LOT of unnecessary junk in the background, or else the x50v doesn't physically have the 64MB of RAM claimed by Dell. Given the way it's crashing on x50 machines, I'm betting that they've got a lot of unnecessary services running in the background causing conflicts that bring the machine to a virtual halt after a few hours of use.
Most of the problems with the x51's have not been with WM5 specifically, so much as the BT stack and the various other things that Dell didn't bother tweaking when they started selling the x51's. Otherwise, they TEND to be stable... outside of the vanishing CF slot, the vanishing SD slot, the occasional ActiveSync-driven quick-battery-drain, and so on. Well, at least half of the x51 users here don't seem to have the 'world ending' issues that were mentioned above. I'm starting to wonder if these all have the same lot numbers...
Also see if ClearType is enabled - if it is, turn it off to save about 500-800K of RAM. Also ensure that ActiveSync is turned off - it takes about 1-2MB of RAM for me.
EDIT: Correction: The Treo 700w and the HP rx1950 only have 32MB of RAM, which means that they usually run with 11-12MB of RAM free on average. Otherwise, most machines with WM5 I'm aware of have 64MB.. and pretty much every review I've seen states that they'll start with 30+ MB of RAM free, something which I can attest to personally.
My x50v with WM5 only has about 25-26meg free immediately after a soft reset. That is with a few today screen apps running, clear type enabled and activesync turned off. Not very much when you consider the 64meg you start with.
Nevertheless, now that I have applied a couple of tweaks/hacks and patches discussed on these forums I have been very happy with WM5 and even with such a small amount of memory it is running pretty well for me. Of course - you can never have too much free memory!

Hmm. Do you have Wisbar, uMP2k? What Today applications are you running and what versions? You SHOULD be able to hit the 30MB barrier, so I'm having trouble figuring out why you'd be running with the reduced load... outside of any problems with the WM5 upgrade image, perhaps.

Nope, no Wisbar or any other menu bar skinning app (as an aside: I install WBA2 every now and then and run with it for a while then always end up un-installing just to go back to a cleaner look).
At the moment the today apps I have running are:
Uptime;
PocketBreeze 5.0.0.1; and
Pocket Weather 1.2.2 build 1579 (running as a tab in PocketBreeze)
I also have Fonts On Storage, HandyMenu, HandySwitcher and the Thinkoutside BT Mouse and Keyboard drivers loading at start up (now that I think of it I guess that little lot could be part of the problem :))
Would love to be able to get more free memory though!

Try PocketBreeze 5.0.0.10 - it does cut down the memory usage a smidgen and loads faster. But I think it's all those extra programs causing issues - HandySwitcher and HandyMenu, I don't have size information for, but the BT mouse and keyboard drivers are probably taking some of your RAM, along with the fonts.

That is what I was thinking - I will give some of your suggestions a try.
Do you use WBA2? If so, how do you find it as far as memory goes?
