Does anyone can refer me to ANY "buyable" software that will secure data on my PDA on WM5? Everything else seems not to work on my dell axim x51v.
This is the scenario:
I have confidential excel database that is active-sync connected and updated during any change. I want to be able to secure that excel on the PDA by either putting password on the folder or scrambling data with high encryption.
I want to make sure that the excel file can be seamlessly transferred to my PDA. Once on the PDA the system encrypts it or pass protect it ( or - both ). Please help.. I have no idea where to go with it - after spending weeks+ searching, all of that good soft works on 2003, not on WM5.
cool, thanks.. I am checking it out now.. Do you know if there is something that when you log off it encrypts specific files, but when you log on ( via pass or whatever ) it decrypts it ?
but I think this is not going to work. The Resco is neat soft, but it doesn’t serve the purpose at this moment. You have to manually encrypt | decrypt the files, too much hassle. I think I will be looking for this solution:
1) When you log to your PDA via password, it will decrypt 2-3 files automatically no need for manual password entry. The files will be ready to use in their regular format under specified directories.
2) When you log off the software encrypts all files again.
This I think is a must for seamless integration with active sync.
I am hoping for other axim users input, or any references they can think of. So far I posted a few questions, but looks like I think I have too tough questions to ask - since I got only a few answers. Or maybe simply the software doesn't exist yet?
How 'bout Sentry 2020 for Pocket PC? I've been looking at this one - have not tried it yet, but its feature list is impressive and it IS WM5 compatible. List of features:
Key Benefits
- Supports all Windows CE storage media: compact flash, MMC/SD, etc.
- Strong encryption: Twofish-256, CAST-128
- Encryption key can be stored separetely on different media
- Multiple volumes
- Volume inactivity time-out
- Command line interface
- Install and Uninstall options
- Compatible with Sentry 2020 for Windows XP/2000/NT
1) Patrick, that was a new one! I haven't seen this soft, while searching millions of pages ;) for a PDA protection. Sentry 2020 looks impressive, but from my first glance I saw that it basically has this same function as Resco Explorer encryption.
a) You have to add files/folders to the program.
b) The program encrypts the file, deletes it and creates a new “folder” with encrypted files
This renders this program useless for me, because each time I want to update this file from my PC ( I add data on the PC files most of the time and then sync it with PDA ) – the sync will look in the default folder, see that there is nothing ( Sentry deleted it!) and put there regular , not –encrypted file. Therefore, we will have:
1) One encrypted folder and one unsecured folder, which is kinda pointless.
The best scenario would be:
PDA OFF / TIMER --- Security Soft---- Encryption of all files.
PDA ON / RESET ----Security Soft----Password Needed ---- Decryption of all files.
This way I can use the file all that I want in their native extensions. Sync it, desync, read, write..etc. You name it. Once I log off. Everything is secured again. Hot sync disabled, Bluetooth disabled, Wi-Fi disabled, etc. Am I making myself clear enough? English isn’t my native language, so I try my best.
~DC:UK~ - CodeWallet doesn’t help. But thanks for the post anyways.

It is hard to believe that such a simple solution isn't anywhere for WM5 ? Is that beacuse WM5 is such a new OS or so hard to work with? I imagine we could make millions by working on a soft like that.

Who is in ?
Hmmm.. simple you say.. well you have it already
I've never understood why somebody would need encryted stuff on their PPC's anyways.. Do you have government (cia, fbi, etc.. ) information on this ppc.. do you have account numbers and stuff..
Click Start>Settings>(Personal Tab) Password>Click the checkmark. (Prompt if device unused for...)>Password Type (Strong Alphanumeric)> Input your pass and hit ok..
You now have $$$FREE$$$ Security feature that is already built into your OS.. When you turn the device off your whole entire PPC will be encryted.. and when you turn it back on your ppc will ask your password (while all files are still encrypted)
and then you will enter that password and magically all of those passwords will be decrypted..
Ta Dah!!!!
peace outside..
Mannequin
ps. when you use activesync with this new password encryption it will ask for your password on sync.. Nobody will be able to access your ppc without your password.. Don't save that information to any removable media like Secure Digital or Compact Flash Cards..
ps. ps.. If somebody were to steal your PPC with this encryption activated you would never be able to access the information on it without the password.. HARD RESET.. ALL GONE
klepto, when you have clients account numbers on your ppc, with their passwords, all info etc - you will learn the need for strong encryptions in case the pda was stolen. with this info, anyone could go and make damages worth of millions of dollars. if you have a respected profile company you can't afford it. :)
anyway- how do you know that once the strong alphanumeric is entered, the whole PPC is encrypted ? Where did you pull that info from? If that is the case, well man - I can't ask for anything more. Please confirm that with a link to resources. ( I have been trying to read about that on Windows Mobile 5 website, but I can't find anything about the system being encrypted while not signed on. It is kinda hard to believe it - if the whole PPC is encrypted, how come the password screen comes up. Something HAS to be uncrypted for this to work.
thanks for the post !

Could someone confirm that Axim x51v encrypts all files while logged off ( using Strong Alphanumeric password )? I can't find any info about that. And if so, how strong it is ?

It doesnt. Its a simple password lock. much the same as your logon password to logon onto a windows xp account. :rolling: It does absolutely no "encryption" to files stored in memory or more importantly that cf or sd card that you may have info stored in.
I have been using Palm since M500 era before switching to a X51v a month ago. While I must admit that PPC has more comphensive features, Palm is leading in this secuirty issue.
Palm has Bi-level of security features: Besides the logon, you can mask your records with password protection.
Another issue for PPC is that while under logon screen, it still displays your full appointment detail whereas Palm will just say "Private Appointment".
However, comparing the features of both systems, I still choose Axim as my current PDA. Hope that in some day, PPC will learn from Palm on this area.
