There is a tool called cabinstal.exe that handles the use of CAB files on PPC really well. One option it has is to keep the .CAB after install.
Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.

If cabinstl doesn't work on WM5, you can copy the CAB to another location then run it from the original location. The copy will remain intact after the install.

There's a program called cabinstl that has the option to save the file. But from this thread it looks like you cannot specify the path for installation anymore.

You can also set the to ReadOnly, there is also a registry hack to prevent the deletion after the install.

So, do you need to keep the CAB file even after installing an application? If the app was installed successfully, you don't have any use for the CAB, no? Isn't it just taking up memory space?

No, you don't have to keep it. It's just handy to have in case you need to reinstall and are away from the PC. Space shouldn't be a problem if you store them on memory card.

I'm a little curious about this. I've installed quite a few cabs on my X51v and none of the original files were deleted (this differs from previous version of PPCs I've had). I did not use any registry hack and am not using cabinstal for this. I just put the file onto my sd card and run it from there for the installation. After the install is complete, the original file is still where I placed it.

I have a similar question on this subject, if I install via an .exe from the PC where can I find the .cab file so I can transfer to my SD card?

I have looked at the cab install program, that is for installing the cabs, that I can do already.

TIA
Rick

well ...it varies !

MOST of the time ... it is in :

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync"

... under the program's respective name ( 90 % of the time )

~~~
sometimes .. it goes in "C:\Program Files" ...under its repective name also
~~~

and occasionally ... some are even under just the "C:\" ... under the program's respective name

it all depends on how the developers wrote the EXE installation file ... just pay close attention when installing and most of the time there will be indication of the location ...

You can find it in Windows/AppMngr/Install folder on the PPC with WM5. But it will be deleted after installation completion.
So I found solution now:
I start File Explorer when Installer is asking about destination folder and copy .cab file from designated folder. Thanks multitasking operation system.

Its the same for me, I never have them deleted. I think it could vary based on what cab installer is already on the system:-0
