Things done better on PPC2002?
I just replaced my well-aged Toshiba Genio e550G (running PPC2002) with a new Axim X51v (running WM5). A couple little things are hugely annoying to me -- it just seems like we've take a step backwards! Can anyone tell me if I'm just missing some setting or something -- or if there is a way to make these work better under WM5?
1. Contacts don't show as much on the screen!
Under PPC2002, the Contacts list looked great to me. It shows, ONE PER LINE, the person's name and phone number. I can therefore fit 15 of them on the screen at once -- 16 if I turn off the ABC box. Under WM5, it does each entry as taking TWO LINES! It puts the contact name and then the phone number underneath instead of to the right! The right half of the screen is completely blank for all of my contacts! What an utter waste of space. Now I can only see 8 people on the screen at once instead of twice that! How is this progress?? It looks horrible now.
Also, under PPC2002, I could tap on the phone number and quickly pop up a list of other phones or emails. This made them readily available for quick viewing. Under WM5, this isn't possible -- tapping on them goes into the full data screen.
2. Calendar now requires me to rotate through views!?
I pretty much only use two views in Calendar -- the day view and the month view. I never need to see the week view or year view. Under PPC2002, there were convenient buttons at the bottom to quickly switch directly to any view. I'd tap on the month view, then I might tap on a day to see the details, then to get back to month view, I just tapped the month button at the bottom. It was simple -- and I did that constantly with one tap. Now, under WM5, I can't do that! If I'm looking at a month view and tap on a day to see the details, there is no easy way back to month view! I either have to tap on "week" at the bottom and then "month" (two taps plus a worthless screen reload for the week view) or I have to do Menu->View->Month (three taps!). Again -- I just don't see how this is a step forward. They should still have the buttons for all of the views (from PPC2002) where "Week", "Month", "Day", and "Year" words are shown in WM5. It just doesn't make any sense to force me to rotate through them now when it was one-tap access before!
3. Filtering Contacts is a pain.
I have several categories of contacts (Work, Church Youth Group, Boy Scouts, Personal mainly). I commonly want to see just one category of people and flip back and forth between them quite a bit. Under PPC2002, the categories were right there -- tap once to drop down the list then tap again on the category to view. Two taps -- and well placed. Under WM5, I've go to go into the lame menu again and do Menu->Filter->Choice. So I've increased my tap by one for no real reason.
It just seems that PPC2002 made much more efficient use of the screen real estate that it had. Now that I've got VGA capabilities and could fit more on the screen, WM5 isn't using that space and just wastes it.
There are several other things -- but those are my big three where I use it every day and wonder why it was so much better under my PPC2002 device!
I'm open to suggestions -- if I can "fix" these apps, great. If not, maybe I should just buy some 3rd party calendar and contact system? I think it is crazy that I have to do that -- but I'll willing to if that is what it takes.
Thanks for your thoughts!
