Registry change gets reset at each soft-reset?

To make a CF GPS work properly on my X51v, I've edited the registry to load a different file (elserial.dll) instead of the standard system serial.dll file. This works great -- except that every time I soft-reset, that registry entry gets changed back to the standard serial.dll! Is there some way around this? Is this a WM5 or Axim-specific "feature"? What can I do about it?

Thanks!

A soft reset will not restore the registry so I suspect some software that loads automatically at startup makes the change. I think what I would try is to change the name of elserial.dll to serial.dll and copy it to the location where serial.dll resides. It might not allow you to overwrite the file and even if it does, the orginal will be restored with a hard reset.

Hmmm... I don't have anything loading at startup that I know of that would be replacing registry entries.

Replacing the file isn't possible -- WM5 won't allow you to replace files in the Windows directory like serial.dll that are system files. Plus, I'm not convinced replacing serial.dll for ALL things is a good idea -- I only want it using the alternate DLL for the CF device...

Any other thoughts?

I used to have these issues where registry changes weren't permanent - until I read somewhere that power off (standby) the devices and wait for 2 - 3 mins before soft-reset. Registry changes (in RAM) will be flush into the ROM at power off.

Ok -- I'll give that a try. Also, I was soft-resetting using the button on the back -- which someone has now suggested that I NOT do for this. So, maybe the changes hadn't had time to be "permanent" yet.

Any quick tool recommendations for doing a software-based soft-reset as recommended?

A lot of places will say that rather than use the button on the back you should use a program like psshutxp to do a software based soft-reset, as it seems that this flushes the registry out before resetting.
