Does Dell have a legal obligation to make WM5 work?
Does anyone know if Dell (or any company) has a legal obligation to make a product (e.g. WM5 for Dell X50) work? I mean can a company legally take money for a product which they have admitted doesn't work and get away with it? As each day ticks away the likelihood of getting an update fades.
certainly the sales of goods act (UK) would say that....
the thing is though there legal requirement may only require them to refund the money paid for the purchase rather than fix it all....
(i'd love to see what watchdog would make of it, as i'm not sure they could explain the issues in 3 mins flat)

In Australia anyway I imagine that they would have to offer you your money back if a product doesn't do what it was claimed to do, is defective, or not exactly what you ordered.
There are usualyl government webites or hotlines which explain consumer rights...

You will first need to define "work". The Axim X50 with WM5 and ActiveSync (no other software) will sync your contacts, email, tasks, and give you reminders.
What has Dell claimed the Axim with WM5 will do besides the mentioned above?

That is the point that the thousands of posts here about WM5 have missed. WM5 loads, syncs, does what Dell says it will. OK, you don't like the way it works, does that make it broken? I tried it for a couple of months, didn't like it and took it off. Just because I didn't like it I don't think Dell "owes" me.
Well, with no other software installed WM5 frequently freezes up. I can't get the Axim to do anything if it keeps freezing up. Dell tells me not to reinstall WM5 as it will likely fry my Axim as it did my first Axim. So yes, Dell does owe me. They owe me a product that functions. This is not an unreasonable request.

Sounds like either a hardware probelm or maybe the rom did not install properly on your Axim. During the past two decades which I have been working with / repairing /administrating computers and peripherals, I have never seen an OS cause physical damage to a computer. I have seen faulty capacitors explode and catch fire, but that was due to the chemicals used to clean motherboards. What exactly do you mean by "fry".

Well golly, microsoft hasn't been able to make windows work for years...
My X51v works just fine....
Sweet Windows bashing.
Windows has always worked just fine. Don't blame the fact you don't know enough about computers on whether or not Windows works.
Yeah, I kind of agree with the orignial post. Dell says bluetooth works. Well, they're like half right. The missing headset profile is a huge problem as far as I'm concerned.
I've got some Windows 2.1 diskettes that might tend to disprove that assertion. But, the more recent versions that were derived from the NT lineage (excluding Windows ME) are OK.
