Viewing Chinese web pages

Does anyone know how we can view Chinese encoded web pages in PIE or Netfront for Windows Mobile 5?

you have to get 3rd party software like the Monster Chinese or the CE-Star.

If just want to read chinese characters, you just need to download a far-east language font and make some small changes to your registry.

Here is an example:
1. Download the sunglobe font: http://www.asukal.jp/source/Font/Font_sunglobe.zip
2. Copy it to your \windows\fonts\ folder on the device.
3. Save the following text as sunglobe.reg and import it into your registry using resco explorer (or use freeware total commander to change the registry manually):
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI]
"FontLinkMethods"="1"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\FontLink]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\FontLink\SystemLink]
"Times New Roman"="\\Windows\\Fonts\\sunglobe.ttf,UniSun"
"Tahoma"="\\Windows\\Fonts\\sunglobe.ttf,UniSun"
"Courier"="\\Windows\\Fonts\\sunglobe.ttf,UniSun"
"Arial"="\\Windows\\Fonts\\sunglobe.ttf,UniSun"
Then soft-reset and it should work. You don't need to mess around with wince.nls, reflash your rom, or change your country region.

You may want to try other asian fonts like mingliu if you find missing characters or need the fonts to look different. There are even font files that support multiple asian languages such as japanese, chinese, thai, korean... You may even already have these fonts on your computer if you checked the option to install far-east language support. Some fonts don't work on the pocketpc so you'll have to experiment. I tried ArialUni, a 22MB font file that can be installed in XP that is suppose to support most world languange but it didn't work for me. :(

More info here about all this: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=103305 and here: http://discussion.brighthand.com/sho...630#post781630, but the methods in those threads usually involve more extensive changes to the system. I would suggest using my method first and then move on from there.

There are also methods to move the fonts to a storage card instead, but since you're using WM5, storing the font file on the device doesn't take away any of your ram.

And if you need chinese input, install this: http://xdao2.seesaa.net/article/12029203.html. It supports simplified or traditional chinese, but you have to set your preference in the input options.

I'm currently using asukal's mUniFontM.ttf font (chinese, japanes, korean), found in his echinaNo5.zip package (http://asukal.seesaa.net/article/6912738.html. I didn't install his pack directly but extracted the font and used my method above to install the font, since installing his pack made changes to my system fonts that I didn't like.

Good luck!

I think I have found something interesting..
Go there: http://www.asukal.jp/English/LocalizeCABS.htm
and get the appropriate files Chinese/Japanese/Korean!
Chinese/Japanese/Korean Font file (WM5 ONLY): http://www.asukal.jp/WM5/echinaNO5.zip

Still I am looking for a nice Japanese input system

More info there:http://asukal.seesaa.net/article/6912738.html

I tried Monster Chinese last night and it is shocking. It took up 2 Mb of RAM and somehow made all other system fonts small. Uninstalling is also a pain as it kept asking me to reboot. I'm so glad I had a backup before I started.

CE-Star is a more polished product. Takes up very little RAM and had a Chinese input although I hardly use.

However, I'll try the registry and fonts method tonight as I'm always concerned about system changes third party software made.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I installed CE-dict, and afterwards started having problems with my WiFi drivers spontaneously unloading after a few hours. While I'm not certain this cased the issue.. the fact that it happened shortly after CE-Dict went on wasn't very reassuring to me, and I ended up doing a hard reset this afternoon, spending an hour or two reinstalling everything before doing a full backup so the next hard reset wouldn't be as ardous.

So far the font changes have worked well for me - it's pretty much what I wanted from CE-Dict in the first place (viewing pages in Chinese and Japanese), but without the extra memory usage and installation hassles.

But if you want Chinese text-entry, CE-DICT Suite's one of the few pieces of software out there for this, IIRC.

dx51v, I have not used TotalCommander before. Instead, I used Resco registry editor to manually put the entries into the registry as suggested by "badbob001". (Importing the registry somehow didn't work for me)

Which step are you having problem with? Or are you not familiar with editing registries ?

Resco Explorer will only import files encoded as UNICODE text as opposed to ASCII text.

If on the PC, use notepad > paste text > save as > choose Unicode under Encoding > save.

If on the Device, use uknote > Paste text > Option > Text > choose Unicode > Save as.

Then see if resco explorer takes the file.

I've actually switched back to using sunglobe.ttf since it makes chinese characters look better than mUniFontM.ttf and I don't expect to view non-chinese characters.

Anybody else using the free chinese input addon? Pretty neat. Now to find a nice chinese-english dictionary. Suggestions? Given the power and storage of the pocketpc, I'm surprised they haven't created a chinese dictionary that can pronounce the words... like all those non-pocketpc electronic dictionaries out there.
