x50V - upgrade to WM5 or not?

I 've not upgraded yet, wondering of the problem have been resolved.

I'm also not ware of what WM5 offers except backup battery no longer required. Does WM5 bring much to the table?

Welcome to the forums! Great place to be.

Remember the old saying, "Leave well enough alone."

That's great advice!

I upgraded my iPaq hx2415 from 2003SE to WM5 and now i own an x51v that came with it preinstalled.

After using WM5 for a while I cant imagine ever going back to 2003. I gave the iPaq to the wife and juts last night she was playing a game and it locked up the device. Soft reset had no effect. I told her to remove the battery and of course she screamed at me for the suggestion. So I yanked the device from her shaking hand and removed the battery and reinserted it. The iPaq booted up and everything was intact except the date and time. After that I gave the iPaq back to wife and offered to reload WM 2003 on it. She in turn offered me the couch to sleep on.

Sorry for the long story. Here are my reasons for loving WM5...

+ Persistent storage means no more data loss
+ Improved formatting for Office documents and support for PowerPoint
+ Dedicated RAM & ROM (No longer dynamic. IMHO this is a plus)
+ Soft Keys (individual opinions will vary on this one)
+ Updated Internet Explorer (Now view full screen and save images etc)
+ Support for Photo contacts in Pocket Outlook

All of those are the positive side of the upgrade. The negatives are:

+ The system is extremely SLOW after the upgrade (both in launching apps and in accessing data in ROM)
+ Many stability isses in an immature operating system
+ Downgraded Bluetooth support

In the end, you have to weigh both sides and decide. I tried really hard for several months to use it, but recently downgraded back to 2003SE. I was amazed at how much faster and more stable my Axim is now.

I did it... just because i thought i should at least give it a go....

and i'd vote for No. Unless you're one of those people (like me) who are going to do it anyway, and then roll back to 2003

For me I didnt notice any performance issues. Specially since applying a few tweaks and settings. Also, for me I get far less lock ups. But keep in mind I upgraded an iPaq to WM5 and my Axim has it preinstalled. So if there are specific issues with upgrading an Axim to WM5 I wouldnt know about it.

The OS itself is worth while to me. I've had a truly positive experience with it on two devices. But in the end what works great for me could be someone else's nightmare.

I just went back to 2003SE on my x50V. I think there's a big difference between the 50 and the 51. With WM5 on my 50, the battery wouldn't even last overnight turned off. It was a lot slower and I had to reset it almost every time I touched it.

Thanks for the comments. For my use I don't see many huge benefits for an upgrade - and I'd like to keep the Tylenol intake down to reasonable levels :)
